This book helped me get my blood sugar levels under control in a matter of days. A lot of the information flies in the face of "conventional" knowledge and advice about diabetes, but it works! It's not the easiest thing to follow--to significantly reduce starches in your diet--but my blood sugar levels dropped into the normal range and is staying there. I would recommend this book to anyone--with or without diabetes.

This is an outstanding book for all people with diabetes or pre-diabetes, but especially so for those with type 2. As a person who has not only had diabetes for 24 years but who has also written a book on diabetes management, Diabetes Self-Defense, I can tell you that Dr. Thompson's program is second to none. Clear, concise, and practical, The Glycemic Load Diabetes Solution truly makes it easy for any reader to understand what the glycemic load is and why it's so important for a healthy lifestyle. Whether it's you that has diabetes or if you're caring for a loved one with diabetes, this is a MUST read. This book will change forever your understanding of diabetes management --- for the better.

I was a little skeptical about it working. It sounded good. I didn't follow it perfectly. It will probably be even better if one did.
After 3 weeks I went for my check up and every part of my lab work was awesome especially my A1C and glucose, but it cut my cholesterol by a fourth in just three weeks!

Disclaimer- I know Dr. Thompson, and when I crossed over to the personal world of Type II Diabetes, he gave me a copy of his first edition. I saw the evidence of his 10+ years handling of his disease, so I implemented it and pounds literally melted off w/o undue hunger, particularly around my middle and my need for long-acting Insulin is minimal. As usual, there is some subsequent lapsing, so I bought his new edition to reclaim momentum. I'll never reach his commitment level- mashed cauliflower as a substitute for the Irish curse of eating potatoes!- but I will pursue his approach. Get good general management from your personal physician (without embracing new drugs like the dangerous Avandia) but make your care much easier by proper dietary behavior.
Kevin M.O'Keeffe, MD
PS I gave the first book to my daughter-in-law who has Polycystic Ovary Disease, a not rare disorder that also merits this approach.

After 20 years as a Type 2 diabetic, I read this book and then followed its recommendations. As a result, I loss 25 pounds and cut my daily insulin use by more than half. The main changes that I made were to eat no starch (flour, corn, rice, etc.), and to increase my level of exercise. I learned about glycemic load of foods and how I can use glycemic load values to maintain my blood glucose at a lower level. The author, Dr. Rob Thompson, writes in an easy to understand style that helped me to learn much more about my diabetes and how to control it.

In all the maelstrom of proselytizing by governments, advertisers, vegetarians and ecologists about what we should and shouldn't eat, Rob Thompson's wonderful book is an island of quiet intelligence. It deserves a far wider audience than just the sadly growing number of us who have been diagnosed as Type II diabetics. In fact, it really should be read by anybody who eats.

Thompson is a practicing MD and board-certified cardiologist who explains the science of food and nutrition in a clear and comprehensive way - and along the way convincingly disposes of several common myths that have had profound effects on Americans' health over the last 30 years. For example, lowering the cholesterol in your diet will lower your blood cholesterol. Well, yes, it may, but only a little, and if, as a result, you satisfy your resulting hunger by eating foods that are high in starch (think bread, pastries, rice etc.), you will likely do yourself more harm than good.

As Thompson explains, in evolutionary terms, starch is a newcomer to the human diet, and our metabolisms have not yet evolved to deal with the large amount of starch in modern foods. Our prehistoric ancestors did not eat hamburgers or french fries. Nor did they drink giant sodas loaded with sugar or high fructose corn syrup that we cannot taste and that our bodies cannot handle.

Unlike many of the foods that we eat, this book is easy to digest, and without doubt, can do a lot of good to anyone who takes its message to heart.

As a "border line" diabetic, I was thrilled to find this book which is simply marvelous! Foods which I thought were absolutely forbidden, are indeed acceptable, for the difference between the Glycemic Index and the Glycemic Load is quite different. The only thing I now need is a book on starchy foods with the list of both the GI and the GL!
