After reading the great reviews, I was very excited to get this book. I really tried to like this book.. but I was quite dissapointed. My main issue that I really felt it lacked substance. It is very clear that the authors knows some amazingly successful women, as ever few pages she mentions them. If I was looking for a story of amazing women that inspire me, I would read their books. But what I was hoping to find out more ways to improve myself. I felt this book had some good points, but lacked to really "roll up the sleeves" and give good advice. Alot of the ideas I feel have been mentioned in other books that I have read. Those books also gave insight and a positive outlook. This book did not make me feel empowered. And I found it was amazing how little time was spent on mentioning anything about being financially responsible. If you are looking to figure out what area of your life needs attention, this might help. But once you figure out what you want to work on, there are WAY better books out there than this one.

The Go Getter's Girl Guide is exactly the type of book I wish I'd had at the start of my career. The insight and advice found in its pages would have helped me move a lot further a lot faster. I highly recommend buying two copies of this book: one to keep for yourself and another to give away to a mentee or other young woman intent on building a successful career.

In this practical, insightful and candid look at the world of work, Debra Shigley covers everything from networking to make-up in her guide for ambitious professional women. Her writing comes across in the tone of a more experienced girlfriend imparting words of wisdom based on first-hand experience in the trenches of corporate America. Weaved throughout the story is the author's own experience as she navigated her way from law student to journalist to stylist to lifestyle expert. She's had several successful career makeovers with each one helping her build experience and skills for the next opportunity. Her background lends credibility to the book: she has practiced what she is preaching -or in this case sharing with candor and honesty.

Although the title might make it appear that the book is intended for younger or newly corporate women, the content is appropriate for any woman looking for advice on how to create the professional success she wants and deserves. The book is full of stories and words of wisdom shared by "Go -Getter" women who have successfully navigated their way to professional success, some inside and some outside of corporate America as entrepreneurs.

Favorite must read chapters:
* Learning the Art of Negotiation - check out the section on raises.
* Knowing When to Quit - a list of good and bad reasons to leave a job
* The World Can Be a Cold Hard Place: Good advice - It's better to regroup and re-strategize than fixate on a negative situation.

I was shopping for a strapless bra today and found myself wishing I had the GGG Guide in my bag. Why? Because the GGG Guide is not just about how to get ahead in your career. It provides specific and practical tools about a variety of topics, ultimately helping you recognize your worth and feel good in whatever professional situation you may find yourself in.

The GGG Guide helped me take the steps necessary to connect with a mentor I have wanted to speak with for quite some time. The chapter on negotiating prepared me to ask for a raise in my evaluation. The section on allies and advocates made me more aware of my attitude and style of communication with co-workers. In addition to all this, the Guide is a colorful and quick read; an inviting self-help book you will actually look forward to opening. As a young woman, I feel more confident knowing I have this Guide nearby to consult when picking out a suit, deciding to move on from a job, or dealing with potential conflicts with co-workers.

The GGG Guide is an important resource for young people in today's work world. Purchasing this book is a very good idea.

Upon reading the Go Getter Girls Guide, I realized that it was just the book I needed to get recharged in pursuing the career I wanted. I am a recent college grad who relocated to a new city upon graduation and I desperately want to work in Public Relations. I started setting up a few one on ones, applying for jobs and attending mixers, but after not seeing results soon enough (and a need to pay my bills), I began working as a temp and started to get too comfortable, thereby halting my "real job" search. This book made me realize that I should never settle for what works at the time. The author's story about reaching out directly to her mentor and receiving positive results made me realize I can't rest on my laurels or else I'll stay dissatisfied. I have started setting up informational interviews again and have begun to network and market myself as my own brand to land the job I desire. I know that there is a long road ahead and there are dues to be paid, but I know that by using my charisma (and looking good and taking care of myself while doing it!) I am going to land on my feet!

I read this book during a difficult transition in between college graduation and landing my first entry-level, full-time job. This is a very honest, refreshing guide to following your ambitions and dreams (cheesy as it may sound, it's true) and keeping your head up in a competitive atmosphere. Debra provides several first-hand accounts of go-getter women -- Soledad O'Brien, Spanx founder Sara Blakely, etc. -- whose stories are inspirational, but more importantly surprisingly relatable. Additionally, as someone with a bit of a fashion-nut bias, I also thoroughly enjoyed the tips that accompany the "...and Look Great While You're At It" point. Two thumbs up!
