Hugh Preston and Mona, aided by the antiquarian bookseller Jelkes, convert an ancient monastery into a temple for the worship of Pan, the goat foot god.The monastery is haunted by the spirit of Ambrosius, a 15th century monk who was condemned for his pagan leanings and interest in Pan. Unleashed occult forces which overlap the centuries threaten chaos, but Hugh and Mona weather the psychic storms and conduct an invocation of Pan.Here ,as with her other novels, Dion Fortune imparts a considerable amount of occult knowledge.

It is a rare opportunity to get a chance to see behind the closed doors of an esoteric lodge. In this book by Dion fortune, we have just this chance. Although couched in the form of entertaining fiction, The Adept Dion Fortune gives us insight into the Greater Mysteries of Initiation. Facinating and most entertaining. a must for every sincere seeker of the western Mysteries! -Paul A. Clark, author of the Broken Seal.

I read this novel with its historical context in mind, not really expecting a great read, but rather more of a vignette of a moment in the development of the modern British pagan mindset. And that is what I found it to be. Although the personal transformation of the protagonist, Hugh Paston, happens quite quickly in the timeline of the story, the story itself moves slowly to cover a fairly small amount of ground. It is not terribly controversial or even adventurous when viewed from the present; in fact, the major characters spend most of their time having the vapors not over their spiritual orientation, but over whether Hugh and Mona will have sex outside marriage--horrors! Will they make it to the altar in time? Well, you'll just have to see for yourself, if you care. There is additionally a good bit of material having to to with "eugenical" marriage and "race memory" that serves as a reminder that the Nazis were in some ways quite representative of social/political trends of their time--just rather more extreme and much more willing to act these views out. So, my verdict is, historically interesting in context, but very dated; no surprises here.

This book is very entertaining and gives a very obvious encounter with the beliefs and practices of the old religion. Its reference to the old religion is still very basic since it does not go too deeply into the different aspects of Pan. It does however give the true importance of the balance of nature. Good for anyone in the study from Initiate up to adept to read.

Ahead of its time I'm sure. I loved it.

Inspires the pagan budding inside us all!

Note: the kindle addition has many typos and punctuation errors.
