Book Description

Who is the Holy Spirit, and exactly what does He do?

Many people find the Holy Spirit mysterious, confounding—even controversial. Why is the third person in the Godhead—the one Jesus said would be the believer’s ultimate source of truth and comfort—the source of such confusion?
In The God I Never Knew, Robert Morris clearly explains that the Holy Spirit’s chief desire is for relationship--to offer us the encouragement and guidance of a trusted friend. This insightful and biblically-based book moves beyond theological jargon, religious tradition, and cultural misconceptions to clarify what the Holy Spirit promises to do in your life:
· Dwell within you
· Be your helper
· Guide you into all truth
· Comfort you
· Pray for you
· Show you things to come
· Never leave you

It’s time to experience the Holy Spirit in a fresh, new way—to meet the God you may have never known.

Includes a small group study guide!

From the Hardcover edition.

Editorial Reviews

Praise for The God I Never Knew
“In an hour when spiritual hunger is increasing and practical clarity is needed to avoid the confusion to which too many are vulnerable, it is a delight to affirm the wisdom, truth, and integrity with which Robert Morris speaks, teaches, and lives. I know no leader today who exceeds the trustworthiness and genuine love for people than Robert, and you will find no better person to introduce you to friendship with the Holy Spirit of the living God.” —Jack W. Hayford, founder and president of The King’s University
“I have learned more about the Holy Spirit from Robert Morris than any other pastor. His insight into this very important topic will motivate, teach, and equip us to embrace the third person of the Trinity, as well as launch all of us into a fresh new season of worship.” —Brady Boyd, senior pastor of New Life Church and author of Fear No Evil
“So much controversy and confusion has surrounded the topic of the Holy Spirit. In fact, most people don’t understand who He is at all. In The God I Never Knew, Robert Morris brilliantly clears up the misconceptions and introduces the Holy Spirit as someone you will want to be your best friend.” —Chris Hodges, senior pastor of Church of the Highlands in Birmingham, Alabama
The God I Never Knew gives life-changing insight into the mystery of the Holy Spirit. If you have questions about the Holy Spirit, Morris’s book will put you at ease and lead you to know and love our comforter, helper, and friend.” —Craig Groeschel, senior pastor of and author of Weird
“In The God I Never Knew, my friend Robert Morris captures the magnificent power, friendship, and treasure that God has given us in the person of the Holy Spirit. He effectively demystifies the common misperceptions associated with this part of the Godhead and will evoke a deeper passion and love for God within every reader. 5.0 out of 5 stars LIFE CHANGING October 13, 2011

Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
My mother in-law first read this book and raved about it. She has been a pastors wife for many years and knows what the Bible teaches. She stated that this is one of the best books she has ever read on the person of the Holy Spirit. She also stated that Robert Morris wrote this book with a boldness that is very refreshing.
I also read this book and it has been life changing for me. I have a greater understanding of the Holy Spirit and the fellowship that he wants with us each day. This book is a must read for those who want to know the person of the Holy Spirit better and his power that enables us to live a victorious life.
My father in-law Pastor David Schoch would have said "Amen" to this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars A skeptic who loved it! August 29, 2011
I requested a review copy of "The God I Never Knew" because I recognize I have long neglected the influence and presence of the Holy Spirit in my own life. I was one of those who grew up in a denomination where I was given poor teaching and theology regarding the Holy Spirit, so I grew fearful and reserved about His role in my daily Christian life. Over the course of years, I flip-flopped from one extreme of Holy Spirit theology to the opposite, and I don't believe either of them are/were biblically healthy.

I read "The God I Never Knew" with an open mind; with a fresh set of lenses, as though I was discovering the Holy Spirit with the faith of a first-time reader of the Bible. I was open to learning fresh what the Bible has to say about the Holy Spirit, and as a result, I'm pleased I read this book. Maybe the Holy Spirit knew I was ready to receive something about Him from scratch; I certainly won't call it coincidence.

The chapters in the book are divided into themes about who the Holy Spirit is, what His character is like, how He came "onto the scene", His gifts, the baptism & filling (although I'm not sure I see a difference theologically), and the controversies over speaking in tongues in public and the use of tongues as a spiritual prayer language.

Morris approached the topics biblically and candidly from his vantage point. His writing is simple to read and not too heady. There were moments when I had to pause my reading to contemplate what was being conveyed, but all-in-all it was not a difficult one to read. He breaks down 1 Corinthians 14 and other passages quite well, making good arguments for the role of the Spirit in believers today.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Life Changing Book! February 12, 2013
Thank you Robert Morris for writing this book and clearing up a lot of common misconceptions about the Holy Spirit. Robert addresses the topic head on that so many pastors are reluctant to talk about. I've spent my whole life in church but don't recall a pastor ever going into depth about the Holy Spirit, The Holy Spirit's reason for being, the Holy Spirit's role in the trinity and all the promises and benefits that are available to Christians who want to grow in their relationship with Him. Robert builds each chapter on a solid foundation of scripture and teaches so many things that I never heard or saw before in the scriptures. Robert's style is funny, engaging and informative. I have a new favorite teacher! Can't wait to read more books written by Robert Morris. I led a woman's Bible Study using this book and the DVD and I can honestly say it was life changing for so many of us. Thank you Robert for sharing the truth about the Holy Spirit.
This book was apparently written from an excellent series of sermons that Robert did called My Best Friend -- The Holy Spirit. You can find them on the Gateway church website. Each of these sermons corresponds to particular chapters in the book:
Sermon #1: "Who Is He?" corresponds to Chapters 1-4
Sermon #2: "Is He A Person?" corresponds to Chapters 5 - 7
Sermon #3: "Is He Penecostal?" corresponds to Chapters 8 - 9
Sermon #4: "Does He Baptize?" corresponds to Chapters 10 - 12
Sermon #5: "Is He Charismatic?" corresponds to Chapters 13 - 16
Sermon #6: "Does He Speak In Tongues?" corresponds to Chapters 17 - 20
Along with the sermons online, there are discussion note outlines and discussion questions that you can print out to correspond with each sermon.

4.0 out of 5 stars A House Divided August 16, 2011
Pastor Robert Morris adds to growing library of works about the often misunderstood and sometimes forgotten third member of the Holy Trinity. This book is his attempt to clear away some of the mystery and confusion that surrounds God in this person. This volume succeeds wildly on one level, but struggles to find its footing on another.

The first half of the book having to do with the reality of the Holy Spirit and His work is a good addition to the growing attention the Spirit is receiving. It is scriptural and doctrinal, and does a superior job of presenting the reality of the Spirit to a church that is desperately in need of an outpouring of the Spirit's power. In addition to the fine explication, Morris applies the truths to our daily lives in way that makes us desire more and more of the Spirit.

Sadly, the second part of the book doesn't hold up the expectations set out in the first. After adhering close to the Evangelical median in his discussion of the reality and work of the Spirit, Morris tips into a scattered series of chapters about separate Baptisms in the Spirit and the miraculous gifts. An extensive presentation of these topics is beneficial to have, but the way in which the author strikes, fires off an anecdote and then moves on is less than satisfying.

Inconsistency aside, The God I Never Knew can serve as a fine introduction to the Spirit or a reminder of the power that He brings to the believer. Some will find the theological diversions unnerving, but understanding the doctrines contributes to the growth of all Christians.
