Editorial Reviews

Reagan was in the White House, the malls were filled with New Wave fashionistas and the Goldbergs were living large in the ‘80s. Documenting his hilariously combative, yet loving family with a video camera nearly as big as he is, 11-year-old geek Adam (Sean Giambrone) is witness to all kinds of insanity from his over-protective, over-the-top mom (Wendi McLendon-Covey), quick-tempered dad (Jeff Garlin), rebellious sister (Hayley Orrantia), high-strung brother (Troy Gentile) and super suave grandfather (George Segal).

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best comedies on TV right now February 7, 2014

This show is amazing. Hilarious, genius, amazingly acted, and just pure fun! Great references and if you grew up during the 80's or were a parent in the 80's, you'll LOVE IT!

5.0 out of 5 stars The 1980's called. They said, "Great show!" April 29, 2014
Format:DVD
Did you grow up in the 80's?

Did Ghostbusters change your life?

Did you mom wear stone washed denim jump suits?

If so you can't miss The Goldbergs.

The plot is pretty simple. It's a typical American family with 3 kids and a quirky grandfather. They go through typical family life shenanigans. But all with the backdrop of the 1980's. The show doesn't really HAVE to occur in the 80's, but it makes it so much better that it does somehow!

The show is based on the actual life of the producer, who based all the characters on his own family. He even puts video clips of his actual 1980's life at the end of every episode so you can see the real people and events that episode was based on!

In the end it's a sweet loving family, even though it doesn't always look that way. It's a cute show with hillarious story lines abotu growing up and being parents. There's something there for everyone!

5.0 out of 5 stars This is my 'Wonder Years' July 21, 2014
By Barry
Format:DVD
'The Goldbergs' is a dream come true. I never thought I would see the day when a show captured my childhood in the way that the brilliant "The Wonder Years" did for kids back in the 60s and 70s. My teen years were the 90s, but nothing compares to growing up as a kid in the 80s. However, the show goes much deeper than just a nostalgia fix. More on that later.

The show centers around the Goldberg family. Mom is an overbearing, overprotective 'smother' named Beverly (Wendi Mclendon-Covey). Dad Murray (Jeff Garlin) is a loud man with a fondness for yelling and dropping his pants at the front door. The kids are passionate, slightly manic Barry (Troy Gentile), the oh-so-cool 80s daughter Erica (Hayley Orrantia), and the youngest is Adam (Sean Giambrone), a bespectacled every kid who films everything with his video camera (just as I did). Then there is Pops (George Seagal), Bev's dad who is a cool older guy who still loves the ladies. Every episode ends with real life home videos taken by the real Adam Goldberg.

I won't go through every episode, but here are some of the toppers. The pilot episode, where Barry is hoping for a car, is a little rough around the edges, but it has the hallmarks that will come to be the show. Natural 80s homages, sweet endings, a real heart, and kick butt 80s song that will always end the show. "Daddy-Daughter Day" has Murray trying to spend more time with Erica by going to the roller rink. "Mini-Murray" is hysterical as Adam gets Pops to take him to an R rated scary movie, which Bev uses to her advantage. The Halloween episode, "Who Are You Going To Telephone", is a classic as Bev learns that the kids are old enough now to have holiday plans that don't include her.

4.0 out of 5 stars I can relate! October 3, 2013
Verified Purchase
I remember watching The Wonder Years when I was younger. I would often wonder if things were REALLY like that and would ask my parents about it.

Fast forward to the Goldbergs and it gives me a similar nostalgic feeling. I was born in 1975 and really was a child of the 80's. I also had a mom that, to this day, you just don't mess with, much like the mom in The Goldbergs. While I feel some of the mannerisms and language feels a bit too modern, the set, the clothes, and the references all provide great memories. The wallpaper in the house KILLS me. I can't help but smile when I see it.

This show is NOT for everyone. Nowadays, we're not even supposed to look in a mad way to our kids, let alone yell at them like these folks do. I'm a yeller, for sure, but would still not let my younger kids watch this, due to language. I do think an older child might be interested in some of the historical social and economic references made in this show. Plus, it's just fun!

Seeing this behind the scenes video really made the show funnier! I love the realness behind it. It just made it easier to relate to.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth Watching December 8, 2013

Entertaining combination of 80's references and clever humor. Am enjoying the family dynamics in this 1980's throwback. Anyone who grew up in - or was present for - the 80's should be able to relate and appreciate the references and humor.
