Absolutely lush jazzy electronica.
Robert E Leet
FyLo's production takes this album to the next level, but is also scaled back compared to his usual "sound collage" style.

And if you like all three you'll likely think it's one of the best albums of the year...and you'd be right.

At least, I assume he's from space. There is almost no Earthly explanation for the bass lines this man can drop. They're some of the most inventive, jazzy, and all-around coolest riffs I've heard in a while. This album seems like a direct continuation on Flying Lotus' "Cosmogramma," on which Thundercat's skill was heavily utilized. Point being- this is a fantastic album, and if you're a fan of Flying Lotus, you're already a fan of Thundercat even if you didn't know it. This man is a savant on the bass. It would be foolish to avoid buying this album.

A sideman no more, Thundercat comes crashing to the fore with a debut that fuses funk, electro and jazz, while working very hard to keep the emotive power of the songs front and center. If you like Prince, Zappa and George Duke, this is your album. And if you like all three you'll likely think it's one of the best albums of the year...and you'd be right.

Standout tracks include:
"Is it Love?"
"Return to the Journey"
"Daylight"
"Boat Cruise"

...but really, there isn't a bad song on this record.

Absolutely lush jazzy electronica.
Highly recommended for fans of Madlib, Flying Lotus, J Dilla, and anybody who loves good jazz and/or electronica :)

This one of a few of my highly anticipated albums of 2011. It doesn't disappoint. Fly Lo's Brainfeeder label will be on my radar for a while.

For all you'll hear about the amazing bass playing (it's phenomenal), the jazz-fusion chops (legit) and the Flying Lotus assist (solid but understated - which I actually mean as a big compliment), Thundercat's vocals and pop sensibilities have kept this on repeat. I bought the mp3s here, but I'm going to grab the vinyl too. It's that good. It's been a long time since I've like a record this much.

I heard a track from this somewhere and then bought the album cold. I can't believe somebody is making this music right now. It's like a mirrored device from the future which transmits the best sounds of the past and transforms them into the future. This is useful technology. Though I bought the MP3 album, I'm think I'm going to order the vinyl and put it in the stack right next to the turntable between Steely Dan's "Aja" and Stevie Wonder's "Inner Visions", so when I don't have time to listen to both, I'll put this on and feel more than satisfied.

I also want to second the comments of the other reviewers. However, I should point out that while some might see this as a collaborative effort between Thundercat and FlyLo and a continuation of their collaboration on "Cosmogramma" (in fact, they themselves might see it that way), I think this album is it's own brand of genius, taking off in its own direction and really coming into a full stride. How I hope this effort has a full head of steam and more releases are hiding in the near future waiting to pounce like GAoA did.

Future R&B Fusion Jazz... It's like Jaco and George Duke made a baby and Flying Lotus filmed it. IMO the best record of 2011, and without a doubt the best bass playing in 2011.

If you like groovy, innovative music, then check out this album! I had to get it on vinyl. It puts me in another world!
