A simple chore of chopping trees turns into a life lesson for a trio of peasant brothers in this fresh take on a classic tale as part of the Happily Ever After: Fairy Tales for Every Child series. Drexel, Axel, and Simpleton are three strapping boys who live with their father and mother in a small kingdom. When father sends the older sons to clear the forest, they encounter a wizard--dressed as a beggar--who asks them for some food. When they brush him aside, their selfishness reaps immediate and painful consequences. Then it's Simpleton's turn to venture into the forest. He, too, encounters the beggar and responds to his plea with generosity. Rewarding Simpleton for his small act of kindness, the beggar gives him a golden goose whose feathers bring good fortune. Meanwhile, a short distance away, the king is distressed because his daughter the princess "had not laughed, chuckled, giggled, or even cracked a smile" for years. It is no surprise that the golden goose plays a part in bringing together the man and the maiden to live happily ever after. Yet first, Simpleton must meet the king's improbable conditions for marriage. Woven throughout this simple tale are subtle messages of the benefits of faith and kindness in everyday living, best understood by children ages 4 and older. --Lynn Gibson

From the back cover

Fairy tales have always been a source of family pleasure, for parents and children alike. Now, some of the best loved classics are being retold in this vibrantly original and musical animated series, Happily Ever After: Fairy Tales for Every Child. Each tale features a hip, contemporary all-star cast of voices, and all-new songs the entire family will enjoy! Classic fairy tales become fresh and fun, told as if for the very first time. So share the magic and wonder with your children as we invite you to enter the wonder-filled world of...The Golden Goose. An act of kindness pays off when the simpleton of three peasant sons finds himself in line to marry a princess! All he has to do is meet three conditions that the king has set--but can he? They seem impossible from the start--but anything is possible when you've got the right kind of help, especially when it comes from an old beggar who isn't all he seems.

Cute Twist June 8, 1999

My kids love this tape. The voice of Sinbad makes it really funny. My 2 year old watches it from the time I turn it on 'til the time it goes off. The better deal is the 4 tape set that includes this tape. I purchased it & my kids love all 4 tapes.

A `hip' version of "The Golden Goose" story, my children (boy and girl; 3 and 5 years of age) and I really like this tale.

And although I didn't find anything objectionable - with the exception of the use of the word `fool' to describe the character Simpleton - some of you might want to check it out before showing it to your children. [Some conservative Christians may object to the presence of a wizard although this is true to the original tale.]

Positive messages besides that. The tale ends with the note that with the Princess' brains, and Simpleton's kind heart they made the perfect Royal team.

Three and a half Stars. Fun and clever. Available at a great price. The Editorial Reviewers do a fine job of summarizing the story.
