Great music in a beautiful box set. Condition was just as the seller described it: a few rough points, but each CD played flawlessly and had very little scuff marks, if any. The music is amazing.

I got this for my dad for Christmas and he loves it, especially that it's in chronological order, so you can hear the progression in their style. The only thing is, I specifically sought out a studio-recorded-only collection and apparently this band is more well known and their fans have a deeper appreciation for the live versions. Just a heads up for any other non-deadhead gifters out there!

One of the best boxed sets ever...Even though all of the expanded and remastered cds are available separately, this saves you the trouble of tracking them all down in the stores (which is nearly an impossible feat). The sound quality (which is breathtakingly clear) is about the best we're going to get, and each CD has a generous amount of bonus material. I found that the bonus material truly enhances the collection in such a way that these versions of the GD cd's are essential. This same review can be slightly rewritten and applied to the "Band Beyond Description" boxed set, which continues their career through to their last studio album "Built To Last". The "Beyond Description" box does, however, omit ""Steal Your Face" (which the band hated). If you can afford to get these boxed sets, the cost will eventually be forgotten and you'll be happy to have them.

Jump in the time machine and discover where it all began. A retrospective of the first several albums released by the Grateful Dead, this box set presents the origins of the band so many still love. From their first recording sessions when they were called the Warlocks (changed at the eleventh hour to the Emergency Crew, due to the discovery of another band already using the name) to the edge of their heyday, this set introduces the listener to the Dead as the world was. Fans should embrace this collection as the definitive representation of the early Dead, when even THEY had no idea who they wanted to be when they grow up.

I bought this as a birthday present for my boyfriend. I haven't yet had the opportunity to open and listen to the CD's but this is just what my boyfriend wanted! It arrived on time, and was exactly as described.

I have purchased both box sets for two siblings both on their 50th birthdays. These sets are so nicely put together with the hidden/bonus tracks and written literature and extras. I actually went through Amazon to a private dealer in San Francisco. He was kind enough to include a T-shirt and some extra material. everything arrived on time and in perfect condition. I would recommend this to any Deadhead. There is so much background and special things to learn about this wonderful band.

The box set itself is not essential to Grateful Dead fans, but the albums definitely are. The Golden Road box set contains 10 albums (12 discs) starting from the Dead's beginning. It is a great deal, I think. If you pay for each album separately, you will probably pay around the same price. And all of the discs are completely filled with bonus tracks and hidden tracks. It seems like a lot of money, but if you do not own any Dead albums and know you like them, then I would recommend this box set to get started. I got mine about a month ago, and I haven't stopped listening to the Dead since.
