Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

The gifts of film composer Ennio Morricone have not been overestimated by the recent hype piled upon them. The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly is one of his seminal works, its power only slightly diminished by its status as one of Morricone's overplayed warhorses. As with only the best film music, it is inexorably linked with the movie it accompanies, and it's wonderfully enjoyable even if you've never seen the film. Purists and aficionados will crow about its ubiquity, but anyone remotely interested in movie music and evocative, atmospheric composition deserves to hear this score. --Keven McAlester

5.0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Spagetti Soundtrack October 7, 2000
Format:Audio CD
I was always very familar with the film "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" and have been a very keen admirer of the soundtrack by Morricone. My big disappointment with this recording is the quality, a remastering is certainly called for, such an amazing score needs this treatment.
The main theme is of course very popular and recognised worldwide, my favorite however is the last track "The Trio". This tune added immeasurably to the tension towards the the end of the film. A triumph for Morricone who always believed that the soundtrack should be an intricate part of the motion picture experience.
Morricone has composed countless works for film and television, however along with "Gabriels Oboe" "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" remains his most popular.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's just plain good March 23, 1999

Format:Audio CD
A great atmospheric mix of rock, ambient and Spanish guitar music. From mellow watch the sun go down laments to the fist-pumping ride into battle finale, this album has it all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Soundtrack that is better than the film March 10, 2002
Format:Audio CD
The soundtrack to The Good, The Bad & Ugly is Ennio Morricone's best spagetti western work. Full of atmospherics and rich melodic moments, Morricone makes the desert landscape seethe with emotions.
The theme is one of the best ever written, with its animalistic cries and muttering. Grunting and apocalyptic guitars: rock n' roll at its best. But there is more. The song is one of the most moving pieces of music I've ever heard.
This soundtrack, unlike most, sounds like a complete work and can be listened to as such. Morricone is economical in terms of his melodic and harmonic materials, but extravagant in his orchestrations, which makes The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly soundtrack flow from beginning to end.

5.0 out of 5 stars MUCH MORE THAN THE DRUM AND FLUTE MAIN TITLE August 22, 2003
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Renowned for and stereotyped by its spirited drum and flute main title, The Good, The Bad & The Ugly: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack goes well beyond the cliché.
Morricone outdoes himself in tracks like Desert, Marcia and, my personal favorite, Story of a Soldier. These tracks are sensitive and expressive of the people and the story behind the story.
Even if the movie doesn't load your gun get the soundtrack and enjoy it for its own sake.

5.0 out of 5 stars Movie Music at it's best August 16, 2003
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
If I was stranded on a desert island and could only pick one movie soundtrack album to have, this would be it. Morricone's music is always good, but this is his best work. This albums is one of those that falls into the "must have" category. The main title is bone chilling and very unique; nothing like it before or since. Worth buying just for the main title. No disappointments here! Update: This a rather short CD with "The Trio" cut short, according to others. There are supposedly better versions out there, but that doesn't diminish the joy of listening to this one.

3.0 out of 5 stars Re-edited music May 14, 2003
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
I remember buying the LP in 1968 when I saw the movie and feeling a little disappointed because especially in the "Ecstasy of Gold," the music was changed some. I couldn't really understand why but then realized that maybe it was because the movie sounds were also in the movie sound track on the film. I never could figure why the soundtrack was spliced and that is the only reason I could see. This also occurs in several other pieces. Other than that the music is good but would have been better had they left things alone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome music June 3, 2000
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
The music, and the movie, are awesome. Even if you've never seen the movie, the soundtrack alone is worth listening to!
When I'm supposed to be doing other things, I often find my mind hearing "Ecstasy of Gold" and see myself running around a graveyard :)

5.0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT September 13, 1999
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
This film score is magnificent in all departments. I wish this that a complete score with extra tracks be released as compared to the Italian release of "Once Upon A Time In the West" on BMG. I highly recommend this film score.
