Healing, hope, and humor can come from the most unexpected places, and the characters in Hugh Willard's new book, A Day of Heroes, proves this for us in a delightful, contemporary story of unusual friendships, bravery, and compassion. With the guidance of his strong, supportive father; Elton Stewart (Buzz) and his rescued friend Roberta (Rob), a vulture, are at the center of people and animals who change their world by overcoming their fears of the unknown and the not necessarily pretty. And when Buzz and Rob are entered in the local Animal Hero's contest, they show us you don't have to come in first place to win. This is a beautifully written book that is truthful to today's families and touches on issues of relationships, divorce, the environment, and handicaps. Hugh tackles all these topics with a wry humor that enchants. A story for children and adults alike, this book will be eagerly sought after in both public and school libraries. Buzz and Rob show us the joys of soaring with vultures even when they can't fly!

"There is no shortage of heroic stories laden with love and loyalty between humans and their four legged friends. But there are very few about vultures - at least not the kind with wings. In The Goodwill Vultures Club, Roberta, AKA, Rob, is just such a furry friend." - Ann Eisenstein, author of Hiding Carly, A Sean Gray Junior Special Agent Mystery series

A Day of Heroes: The Goodwill Vultures Club
Good guys don't have to finish last, or first. Ultimately it is the relationships we find and grow with two legged, two taloned, and four legged friends that define a life well lived. Hugh Willard smartly wraps life's early hard lessons of rejection and loss in a remarkable blanket of fun and frivolity that will keep young readers (and older ones too!)rapt throughout. Great Message!

Hugh Willard's chapter book, The Goodwill Vultures Club: A Day of Heroes, is just the kind of story, adults and children should enjoy in the 21st century. It spins a delightful tale of characters, including 10 year old Buzz Steward and his steadfast vulture companion Rob. The characters and storyline will win your heart and respect. This book teaches you to not judge a book by its cover. The story is quite original, as the club has two dogs and a vulture in it. The writing style is phenomenal, It's a good lesson for any age, even though it's written for tweens. Readers should definitely buy "Goodwill Vultures Club" because it's really an amazing story that tells teaches you to not treat people differently. I really enjoyed this story, and I recommend it to anyone.

My Review: When 10 year old Buzz Steward came across a wounded vulture while camping with his dad and brother he took the bird home and nurse it back to health. The Vulture became his best friend and he named her Roberta, Rob for short. Buzz formed a club with his pet friend Rob and two dogs

When Buzz's friend PeeWee told him about a commercial about the Animal Hero's contest, Buzz decided to enter contest with Rob since the contest is about how animals deeply impact the life of someone. Buzz and Rob seem to be a good candidate, since his parents' divorce he had been so up set till he found Rob.

But some people in his community were quite antagonistic toward Buzz and his avian friend. People do not like vultures because they are not attractive as parrots and they eat dead animals. So why would he have a disabled ugly looking vulture as a pet? While others see the vulture as ugly, others see her as inspiration and joy.

This story teaches us not to treat people differently disabled or not.
