About the Author

KRS ONE is a philosopher, activist, author, lecturer, and emcee. Since founding canonical Hip Hop act Boogie Down Productions in the mid-1980s, he has released a granite-solid catalog of 19 full-length albums, along with a star-studded list of collaborations. In 1988 he founded the Stop the Violence Movement, a collective of artists, activists, educators, and entertainers exploring the roots of violence while working to promote the development of positive conflict resolution methods; he is currently producing an album celebrating the organization’s 20th anniversary, with contributions by Nelly, Method Man, Busta Rhymes, The Game, Hakiem Green, Grant Parks, Duane “Da Rock” Ramos, and many others. KRS ONE is an accomplished public speaker who has delivered lectures at over 500 colleges, universities, and other venues. In addition to The Gospel of Hip Hop, he is the author of The Science of Rap (1995) and Ruminations (Welcome Rain, 2003). Currently, KRS-One is touring the United States with Stop the Violence, urging America’s urban centers to seek non-violent conflict resolution over revenge and war.

KRS has done more for Hip Hop than probably anyone. This book is an attempt to describe where the culture comes from and where it is headed. It discusses the religous, occult, and mystical aspects of Hip Hop as a culture...much more than just music. In fact the music isn't really even mentioned much. The main point KRS stresses is that Hip Hop is born out of LOVE. He preaches love and peace in place of the materialistic hedonism that "rap music" is becoming. He wants peaceful revolution like Martin Luther King, whom he calls Hip Hop's King.

KRS is effectively creating a religion or "cult"(aren't all religions cults?) but he does stress the point that this new religion will encompass all religions which is kind of anti-organized religion I think. Although he does come off a little dogmatic (especially when talking about his TEMPLE OF HIP HOP) at times, he IS genuinely trying to help people in a meaningful way which I don't think should ever be perceived as wrong...Blasphemy Schmasphemy, God is everywhere.

"And we don't wanna pay no money fee to hear the same old sound, watch and we'll take Hip Hop to a higher ground"

What's good? I'm Will Hawkins Jr. Founder of the Higher Science Research Institute in Houston. This book is a must read for any musician, persons interested in self help, or those light travelers who want a better understanding of the link between Hip Hop culture and the protection that it affords the human race.

Glad that this finally arrived after week or two. So looking forward to diving deep into this reading. It arrived in great condition in a padded envelope. This 830 page piece of knowledge is well put together. It's from PowerHouse Books which I have found to always be great quality.

A must read for all Hiphoppas! I had the pleasure of meeting KRS-One at a speaking engagement about Hiphop & the state of the culture. People will say that this is a play on The Bible. And it is. It teaches us about love of the people and love of the culture and allows us to use our eyes to understand the world we live in & why Hiphop is important to Hiphoppas. KRS-One is a brilliant individual and a very humble dude. Think of this as a Hiphop study guide to ready along side of your spiritual readings. You can be Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Spiritual or whatever - if you love Hiphop culture and understand it is more that "rap-music", you'll find this a great read.

Peace. This book is much like any other sacred text. Anyone can pick it up, but only those ready to receive and listen will be able to overstand the message. This book has really opened my eyes up to a lot of things that I had only previously cracked the surface of, or didn't know at all. It has led me to a deeper overstanding of myself and my Kulture. I highly recommend it. ONE! ~Von Halford
