Review

I could speak at length about how much I recommend Marty Machowski s books to churches and indeed I do, along with books from a long list of other authors. But Marty s resources for families and children also appear on a far shorter list that places them in a more significant category for me: they are books that I actually use in my home. Again Marty has provided us with a God-centered, Scripture-grounded, gospel-driven resource that orients the minds of children toward the wondrous works of God. --Timothy Paul Jones, Ph.D. Associate Professor of Family Ministry, Southern Seminary; editor of The Journal of Family Ministry

Marty Machowski gets the gospel and knows how to transfer it to kids in a way that delights the soul and engages the mind. The Gospel Story Bible is a treasure for parents of young children. But it s not just for children Marty traces the gospel through the Bible with crystal clarity and traction for all ages. Few pastors I know are this skilled in making the glories of Scripture so accessible in narrative form. It s a must buy. --Dave Harvey, D. Min. Sovereign Grace Ministries; author of When Sinners Say I Do and Rescuing Ambition

More good news for parents (and grandparents)! Marty Machowski has once again delivered an excellent resource to help us lead children spiritually. The Gospel Story Bible explains the storyline of Scripture from Genesis to Revelation in 156 chapters, with vivid illustrations and thoughtful discussion questions for each reading. I fully anticipate that as you read this to your children (or grandchildren), you will be amazed together at the grace of God revealed in Scripture. --C.J. Mahaney President, Sovereign Grace Ministries; author of The Cross Centered Life

I love the idea of this type of story Bible. However, after reading a selection of the stories included, my review is a bit mixed.

The Good

The project is a great one! To tell the entire story of the Bible and show how every story points toward Jesus and how all the "individual" stories are really part of one larger story. Excellent!
The stories are based on the ESV translation, which is my personal preference. The stories are very close to the actual Scripture, with only a little bit of "commentary" added.
Each story is only one or two pages, so it's a great length for reading to younger children.
Each story combines portions of Scripture which might otherwise be under several headings, which gives a nice overview of the entire story without it being too long. For instance, the story of the birth of Christ includes both the wisemen (which is only recorded in Matthew) and the shepherds (which is only included in Luke) which then makes one bigger story to help children see the whole picture.
The book is incredibly colorful and the pictures are unique. These are not your typical "Sunday school" drawings.
In the beginning of the book are wonderful suggestions on how to use this as a resource with your children. I especially appreciated the author's suggestion to use this book as a launching point to read the same story in Scripture.

The Not-So-Good

While the notes in the beginning indicate that this would be best used with preschoolers or younger grade school students, I actually think this would be better-suited for older grade school students. At that age, however, I think a "young readers" Bible would be the best option.
The author uses big words that most preschoolers will not understand.

In The Gospel Story Bible, Marty Machowski chooses 156 stories that can be read by any age group - simple enough for parents to share with younger children or beginning readers - and ends them with a short thought about how each story connects to God's larger plan of salvation through Jesus.

Beginning with creation (of course), Machowski moves through the Old and New Testament even into the epistles to show the plan of God unfolding, from the need for salvation right through to the effects of salvation in the early church stories. While a few statements like "Today, Jesus is our ark" may need some explanation, overall the connection is clearly and simply made. Machowski also provides the relevant Bible passage for further reading along with 3 questions to help think through the story presented, and the introduction also includes suggestions for using the Gospel Story Bible with different age groups.

The overall visual appeal of the book is wonderful - full vividly colored pages with retro-feel illustrations by A.E. Macha. There's lots for the pre-reader to explore, and excitement to the turning pages.

While the obvious audience is children, the Gospel Story Bible is really applicable to any age group or level of Christian believer. It makes connections through out Scripture in a rather unique way that can introduce Jesus to the new believer, or can prompt further study for the long-time Christian (which is how I've been using it lately). One of the best story Bibles I have ever encountered - it's a truly unique telling of the gospel story.

I honestly didn't think I'd come even close to finding a storybook Bible that I love as much as The Jesus Storybook Bible that we've had for a few years now. But when I saw this one I knew I had to give it a try. I really do like it! It's got more actual scripture references than the JSB, but the storytelling isn't quite as creative. But I do like that there are many more stories than the JSB has. The pictures are also very nice (not quite as lovely as JSB). One thing that is a little weird to me is that the skin tone of each of the biblical characters is left white. I believe the introduction states something like they did this intentionally so that the child reading it could picture themselves in the story. Hmmm, I think it's odd for a child to be picturing him/herself as Jesus, etc. And I know that, ethinically, the people in the Bible did not have white skin. But once I look past the white skin color I really think it's a nice storybook Bible.

My husband is a non-denominational pastor and started reading the ESV Bible to our baby girl the night she was born. Needless to say, he was not a fan of the basic baby books of Bible stories that we received as gifts. I wanted something that would engage her a little more with more manageable lengths of stories though so bought this after reading many positive reviews. So far, we've made it through the Genesis stories (about 10 stories) with our 4 month old and my husband and I have only had to skip one story due to disagreement with interpretation of the scripture. I count that as a huge success compared to the other theologically weak Bible story books on the market that we were skipping 90% of the stories. I also really am impressed at how seamlessly this book ends every story with the Gospel message; that's something I have a hard time doing on my own with adults so having this as a resource with the Gospel stories written in words kids can understand is worth so much to me. Obviously, I don't expect my 4 month old baby to understand the stories yet but the stories are short enough that she stays interested by listening to us read and looking at the pictures and I definitely can see us reading this with her for many years to come. So minus the occasional scripture disagreement (something that occurs pretty much every time the Bible gets condensed or translated, and something we will teach our daughter to discern anyway), this is an excellent addition to any child's library.
