Editorial Reviews

Review

'This is a brilliant book. The author's observations as to what the text is saying will sometimes come as an eye-opening surprise especially to those already familiar with - Thomas.'

'Valantasis has written the best commentary on the - Gospel of Thomas that has ever been written and it is hard to imagine that a better internally referential one could be written.'

'Can be strongly recommended to any reader interested in the development of early Chrstianity.' - Network

'It is pleasant when one picks up a book on an early Christian document and soon afterwards can say: This is the book I have been waiting for to recommend to my students. Such is my reaction to this book ... The syle in which Valantasis writes is clear and concise ... a good and useful work that deserves praise ...' - Thomas O'Loughlin, Heythrop Journal

I thought that I would write a true review of this book for readers interested The Gospel of Thomas from a more academic or scholarly perspective. Never does Dr. Valantasis suggest adding the book to the current canon. Rather, he conducts a very thorough and thought provoking exegesis of the text. In addition, he provides an excellent historical basis. Now, the book is subject to criticism from other schools of thought, but I don't think Dr. Valantasis would deny this. He provides an excellent historical de-mythologization of the text. For the curious reader, or the serious scholar, this is an excellent addition to the literature on the Gospel of Thomas.

The addition of this book to the Bible would make this world a better place. We Christians would be more like Bhuddists.

I know that Routledge has put out some amazing books and it quite suprized me that they would be interesting in publishing a book concerning the gospel of thomas. But nevertheless, this is a very scholarly book. The author does not delve himself into mindless speculation, but rather the hard facts. Those that have read Elaine Pagels' 'Beyond Belief' should rather focus their attention on this book if they wish to read a scholarly book at its finest. Definately worth the price.
