This story is about Miss Hunnicut, a young woman who was engaged to a man who seduced her during a carriage ride only to use it against her so he didn't have to marry her.

In an effort to at least get some sort of life she agrees to a job as a Governess for a couple on an island in Scotland.

Maybe I didn't read the description of this book well enough, but this book seemed like it had a good premise as an erotic story. What I found upon further inspection was a book that could have been much more than it was. If you read erotic fiction strictly for the sex portion of it then this is the book for you. There is very little of a story here.

This book looks like it might have been a much longer story (at least that's what I hope) and someone hacked it to pieces only leaving the various ways this couple takes advantage of Miss Hunnicut. It doesn't even come across as a good S&M book (Try the Story of O instead of this book). I know it was fiction but this story is too far fetched. Miss Hunnicut falls in love with the Lord of the manner so her attraction and desire to please him are likely. However, the fact that in the time period this is set in to have a couple living on a secluded island with a group of friends that come around for nothing more than taking advantage of this one girl seemed to far off.

This story was nothing but one sex scene after another and they became tedious after awhile because it's the same thing only with another person.

Add in the fact that the "Master of the House" has this power over her and it doesn't make me think of Dom/Sub but just poor editing. This story had promise if they'd added more story to it.

This book seemed too hacked together for my taste.

I recommend books by Robin Schone, Thea Devine, Bertrice Small, or books in the Black lace series over this one.

I confess, I've always been a sucker for the Wuthering Heights variety of novel, so when friends recommended M. S. Valentine as the Queen of Wuthering Heights erotica, I couldn't resist. I was not disappointed. The Governess is the tale of an innocent young woman duped into leaving her family to take up a post on a remote Scottish isle. Her employers, Mr. and Mrs. Crawleigh, have other ideas which have nothing to do with looking after their purported child. Miss Hunnicut (the governess) falls in love with her enigmatic male employer, making her prone to all sorts of delicious tinkering at the hands of the couple. I found the story highly engaging and highly arousing, with characters that practically jump off the pages in their vividness. Valentine weaves and interweaves the characters and their personal stories with cleverness and style, leaving you wishing that the novel would go on forever. I, for one, did not want it to end!!

Maybe it is the way it was written - kind of in a distant type of way with no real dialog. I would have appreciated more real dialog - what did Mr. Crawleigh say to Miss Honeycutt to get her to comply to everything so willingly? Everything seemed to be written in a vague manner - yes the sex scenes were explicit but you were not able to realize how they got her to comply with everything. I think this book could have been so much more - I too think the Robin Schone books are much much better.

I had great visions and expectations of sugarplums dancing in my head when I bought this book about the governess, but ... unfortunately I was rather sorely disappointed ....

Well, the first thing is that the heroine of the book Miss Hunnicut ( don't ya just love those names ) is really the governess of nothing, as there are NO young people in this book. She gets hired by a recluse couple living in that ubiquitious English mansion, on an island no less, in Scotland, and, I could only imagine they made it an island to avoid having to explain why the governess couldn't escape ......

The story is actually quite simple as Miss Hunnicut gets used and abused by not only her employers but also some ephemeral, whatever that is, spirits ....

I gave the book 3 stars since I guess it would be a good book if you really don't want to think while you read...

Like M. S. Valentine's other titles, this one never fails to arouse, excite and flow with rich seductive prose. The protagonist Miss Hunnicut can be compared to an erotic Jane Eyre as she's seduced by her employer (and employer's wife). Valentine adds a touch of the supernatural, keeping with the mythology of the Orkney islands of Scotland. Lots of atmosphere, imagination, and thrills. A sexy and interesting erotic novel in the tradition of the classics.

The Governess is as delicious and satisfying an offering as a ice cream sundae. Titillating, provocative, original and atmospheric -- just imagine you are reading a sexed-up novel by one of the Bronte sisters and you'll get the picture. M. S. Valentine delivers erotic fiction at its finest. It just doesn't get any better than this!

The story involves a young man who comes under the control of a sadistic Governess and her total subjugation of him over a period of several years... It is filled with tales of his punishment, humilation and torture at her hands. A truly wonderful read and one of the finest examples of this genre. You won't be disappointed with this book.

The Governess is my first-ever M. S. Valentine read, and I must confess that I am now happily addicted. The story of the lovely and innocent Miss Hunnicut is reminiscent in some ways of Jane Eyre, although I doubt the hapless Jane ever got up to the activities of Valentine's protagonist. Poor Miss Hunnicut is lured to the Crawleigh's home under false pretenses, then finds herself unable to leave. Instead she is seduced by not only Mr. Crawleigh, but Mrs. Crawleigh as well, not to mention a handful of randy ghosts. And it just keeps getting better and better. Valentine weaves her lusty tale with all the elan of the Victorian classics, and it's a delicious ride from start to finish. I couldn't put it down. Anne Rice, move over!

I loved M.S. Valentine's Celia novels and had looked forward to reading another one of her Victorian erotic tales with a BDSM twist. The Governess is about Miss Hunnicut (the only name the author provides) and her entrance to the Crawleigh Manor. In an attempt to move on from a painful breakup, Miss Hunnicut accepts to work as a governess at a private home. However, she had not anticipated the debauchery that goes on inside the Crawleigh residence. The Crawleighs are not an ordinary couple by a long shot -- and neither is the entire Crawleigh residence. Miss Hunnicut finds herself going along with the extreme and sometimes deviant sexual games Mr. Crawleigh puts her through. To make things all the more strange, there are some rather sexual ghosts inhabiting the home. Miss Hunnicut hadn't expected all of the strangeness around her, but will she want to leave?

I thought The Governess was an exquisite erotic novel. Valentine does a wonderful job with the erotic scenes and the development of the characters. This novel is kind of different from the Celia novels. This one has a darker, more gothic language throughout the book. I thought this book would be similar to the aforementioned books, but Valentine has proven to be quite a versatile writer. The sex scenes are the highlights of the novel, as it should be, for this is erotica. The delectable scenes and the unexpected turns the story took at times enthralled me. I loved The Governess. This author is now right up there with Emma Holly, Nina Roy and Lucinda Carrington as my favorite erotica authors. I recommend this gem.

M. S. Valentine's The Governess is an extraordinary lyrical journey of the erotic intellect chronicling a young woman's sexual awakening. Told in a fresh and inventive way, the author offers us stunningly erotic depictions rendered in compellingly elaborate detail of every conceivable sex act. Yes, they are graphic as hell, but not in your face. This erotic romance rivals the best from the Victorian writers, while still maintaining enough of a modern tone to appeal to non-traditionalists. A rich and satisfying read.
