Editorial Reviews

Product Description

To mark the fiftieth anniversary of Percy Grainger's death in 1961, we are re-issuing The Grainger Edition, Volumes 1-19, in a nineteen-disc box set, which will be available at a very special price. The box set demonstrates the extraordinary range of Grainger's compositional styles, including orchestral works, works for wind orchestra and for chorus and orchestra, solo songs, works for chamber ensemble, as well as works for solo piano, here performed by Penelope Thwaites.

Review

With 127 premiere recordings, 19 CDs for the price of four has to be the bargain of the year. --Gramophone, Jeremy Nicholas, April 2011

It is simple, beautiful music.
Gengler
Since Grainger set some pieces for more than one ensemble, it would also have been nice if these had been cross-referenced in the booklet.

Highly recommended and you will not regret buying it.what a treat to listen to the music after a hard day work.

In commemoration of the 50th anniversary of Percy Grainger's death, the Grainger Edition is a recently released compilation of the 19 individual recordings from Chando's Grainger series. These were all recorded and released between 1992 and 2002. While the individual works are too numerous to mention here, I've included a summary of arrangements by CD:

CDs 1-3: Orchestral Works I-III
CDs 4-7: Works for Chorus and Orchestra I-IV
CD 8: Works for Unaccompanied Chorus
CDs 9-10: Works for Wind Orchestra I-II
CDs 11-12: Works for Chamber Ensemble I-II
CD 13: Songs for Mezzo
CD 14: Songs for Tenor
CD 15: Songs for Baritone
CD 16: Works for Pianos
CDs 17-19: Works for Solo Piano I-III

This is a somewhat difficult set to recommend, even though I personally love Grainger's works. Over a lifetime of playing in various wind/symphonic ensembles and bands, I've always enjoyed performing his works. In fact, Lincolnshire Posy is an absolute masterpiece for band. Other favorites over the years have included Shepherd's Hey, Country Gardens, Ye Banks and Braes o' Bonnie Doon, Handel in the Strand, etc. The challenge is that Grainger, who was a collector and arranger of English folk songs, arranged many of these for multiple ensembles. This means that in a collection like this, there are multiple versions of works like Shepherd's Hey (Orchestra, Wind Orchestra, Chamber Ensemble, etc.). I don't have a problem with it, but other collectors might not be as interested.

On the other hand, Grainger's voice is unique. Even when you hear different arrangements of the same piece, there is enough variety to always keep things interesting.

First, I'd extend appreciation to the previous reviewer for lsiting the contents of this great set, and for his perceptive comments. I would like to second his main points that the sound quality of this set rank with Chandos best (which means that it ranks with the finest in the industry) and that it is both inconvenient, and a damn shame that Chandos chose not to print the contents of each disc on the back of the individual cardboard sleeves. Flipping through the comprehensive and informative booklet for track listings is inconvenient and cumbersome.

That said - I do feel the need to respond to the reviewe's statement that this may be too much of a good thing for most people. This is not at all a difficult set to recommend. In fact, for those who are looking to explore some new music that they are probably not at all familiar with, I'd say it is somewhat essential - especially given the consideration that this set is selling for about $4/disc! (The amazon shipping charges alone on 19 individual discs would cost nearly as much as this set)

I came to Grainger late in life. I had long enjoyed Gardiner's magnificent single disc collection of orchestral/choral works, Danny Boy. Danny Boy: Songs and Dancing Ballads by Percy Grainger inexplicably now selling for pennies on the amazon used market. (This would remain a first choice for a single disc compilation of Grainger's work). Deciding to dip my feet a bit deeper into the Grainger waters I purchased several of the individual discs in this series - orchestral, choral, piano, wind and baritone songs. With each purchase I was delighted by the music. This is not deep classical music.

This 19 CD set contains all of Percy Grainger's works for a variety of ensembles. Included is a thick booklet filled with track listings, brief histories of each piece, and the lyrics to the vocal works. Not sure if all of the recordings in the set are of his original settings; in the booklet some tracks say "premiere recording of this version." Others say "edited for performance by (...)". As a Grainger enthusiast I really just want to listen to his original settings since there are already a countless number of arrangements of everything he's done.

I wouldn't say that any of the recordings are the best of the best but they are still top-notch. I got this set from Amazon right when it first came out, and it was less than $30. For some reason Chandos has increased the base price to 53 euros ($70+) which I think is a bit much.
