Fantastic story of this country's true beginnings. This program should be required as part of the curriculum in American high schools.

This series is beautiful. It strings together the experiences of real people that span the many decades. It follows people's dreams, their enormous hardships, crushing setbacks, their crimes, heartbreaks, and legacies to the future. It's told in a balanced way, honestly conveying the experience of all the societies and cultures involved. The narrative is largely made up of real words from people who were there, drawn from their letters, diaries, or messages. It's powerfully done and it made me weep. This is the kind of storytelling that acts like a truth and reconciliation commission to heal wounds and open minds.

Great series and I learned many things that I did not know. It was interesting learning about how the Native Americans got displaced and the many broken promises and treaties. The story of Mexico and California and how the gold rush had such an impact was of special interest as well.

The only reason I am not giving the The West five stars is the simple fact of it's showing it age. If Mr. Burns ever remaster this work. It surely would be a five and half stars show. I have always like Ken Burns work, and this show is one of his finest works. Mr Burns treats the history of the west as a complex and difficult piece of American growth. Which is the way it should be treated. So I say add this to your video library and stock up on the pop corn and enjoy yourself.

So much history that we don't get in American history courses. It shows time and time again how the west was stolen.
