this is an AMAZING book if you like large,beautiful,high-quality pictures of ancient sites of all kinds from all over the world!
i bought this because i thought it would be a nice addition to my library - but, i had no idea how vivid, beautiful, and high-quality the pictures would be!

also, there is plenty of text to accompany the photos. this is a big book (in pages and size). the only "negative" (if you want to call it that) is because of the thickness of the pages and overall size of the book - it is a bit heavy. that may turn off some. but it is so minor compared to the value you get out of the book.

this book comes with my HIGHEST reccommendation possible.
i bought it (off of amazon, of course) from "harvest books" - an excellent seller.

The Great Book of Archaeology is first and formost an enormous coffee table book. It does not have a single author but it is instead edited by Valeria De fabianis and Fabio Bourbon and has been translated into English. There are 9 others who have contributed to the text. There are 512 pages.

Its massive size includes not only its construction, but also the many full color photos that are a poster sized 14 X 20 inches, or covering two full pages.

Therefore, the main appeal is the photographs themselves rather than the text which is descriptive but brief and not in depth. Looking at these photos is like looking at archaeological monuments as one would see them as observed through a large window. The focus is mostly on structures as they stand rather than who built them or on the smaller artifacts associated with the various cultures. Much art work is covered and in great detail.

There are a few maps and sketches of the areas which places the various sites as they appear in the world. Otherwise the inexperienced reader might not know what geographical area the sites belong. And not all known archaeological sites are represented. It is not complete.

I therefore feel that this book would be of the most value to tourists rather than anyone who has a serious interests in archaeology and the various cultures and peoples who created them.

I love this book! I saw it at my dentist's office and had to have it. The photographs are amazing! They cover a lot of different places. It is perfect to give you a good taste of a lot of places, and then you can research further into any you are interested in. I like that it gives you enough info to really get you excited. And I can't say enough about the pictures. Really breath taking! It is big and perfect for your coffee table. My two young kids even like looking at the pictures with me. Excellent book!
