These lectures motivated me to read some books on the subject. I can think of no better criterion of excellence in teaching than that the teacher motivates his or her students to want to learn more.

These lectures are far superior to the books that I read in two ways. First, there is more substance in these lectures than any of the books I read, including one textbook.

Second, the books -- including the textbook -- give very little true explanation. Instead they provide a list of ordered steps for each phenomenon, like saying a car works because the fuel line is attached to the carburetor. At the end of the day, even if I can recite the steps back in order, I feel like a chicken that has learned to peck keys on a toy piano: music may come out, but I'll never understand or appreciate it.

These lectures, on the other hand, explain the "why" for each and every phenomenon. They keep coming back to fundamental factors, explaining again and again how these same factors apply in the particular case, and what unique factors cause the outcome to be different. When you're done, you've actually learned a lot!

(Beware! This is NOT "Weather for Dummies", or one of those TV series where they pack 10 minutes worth of material into every hour. It's a college level course. Be prepared to do nothing but pay close attention while watching the lectures, and probably watch many segments more than once.)
