Strangely melodic,

This is the first cd I have ever gotten from Septic Flesh and I honestly had heard nothing (except for the music samples on Amazon) before I made my purchase. I just knew it had heavy amounts of orchestra to it. And I love orchestra with my metal. So when I popped in the cd I absolutely loved the first track, "The Vampire From Nazareth". Then I started listening to the rest of the cd and I wasn't nearly as impressed. But WAIT. I ALWAYS give cds two or three plays to see if the sounds end up fitting eventually. And I can say, "The Great Mass" came together amazingly after my third listen. I think my main issue at the start was I was expecting some extreme fast and brutal metal. While this cd certainly is heavy, there is also a lot of overlapping melodies and catchy vocal lines that threw me off. However, as I said before, once these tunes have sunk in you won't be able to get them out of your head. My only complaint now is that I wish it was longer because I can't get enough! I might have to check out their back catalog soon...

The greatest mass of all.,

This review is from: The Great Mass (MP3 Download)
I originally wrote my review after hearing the album on Youtube. Now that I officially have the disc in hand... I'm even more impressed. I became a recent Septic convert after the unbelievably awesome "Communion". I have been pumped for "The Great Mass" since I heard it. I've been listening to the first single "The Vampire From Nazareth" for months now and I love it. I figured if that one song is any indication of what this album will sound like than not only will it be as good as "Communion" but it may even surpass it. I was right.......and wrong. "Vampire" has all the things that made "Communion" great but that one track was only a hint of the awesomeness that "Mass" throws at you. I often get ripped for writing overly long album reviews with track by track breakdowns so I won't do it here. My favorites here are... "The Vampire From Nazareth". "A Great Mass of Death" Probably my favorite song at the moment..."Apocalypse"....simply amazing track. "The Mad Architect" "The Undead Keep Dreaming"........a really weird track but simply awesome in all its strangeness. One of the album's curveball tracks that really work. "Oceans of Gray".....so many layers. "Pyramid God" Really there are no weak tracks. There is a TON of variety. From the sheer powerful beauty of "Rising". To the thrashy feel of "Five Pointed Star". And finally the one song that will make some fans a little uneasy is "Therianthropy". This could very well be a break out song for Septic Flesh. I dare say its radio friendly.......and the only radio friendly song on the album. Well...about as radio friendly as Septic could be lol. It's also the last song on the album and like the last song on "Communion" it's a weird but proper way to close the album. I'll be totally honest here....the first time I listened I was VERY disappointed. I just wasn't "feeling" the songs. But like any great album this one has so much depth, so many layers so MUCH to take in that repeated listens are a must in order to appreciate just how great this album really is. Easily the front runner for metal album of 2011. Septic Flesh simply has no competition. Many albums are good but few are classics. The symphonic metal genre now has it's "Master of Puppets", it's "Reign In Blood". There is no filler on this album. Each and every song is unique and important to the overall flow of the album. Masterful from start to finish and an album that people will go back to for years to come. Highly recommended.

These guys have been around for a couple decades now, releasing their first album way back in 94'. I guess I can say they went through a few stages in their music. The first four albums being unconventional blackend death metal, the next two are experimental electronic/industrial alternative influenced death metal (yeah that sounds really weird but Revolution DNA & Sumerian Daemons are sick and phenomenal albums), and now Communion and The Great Mass being the latest stage of the band. Both albums being avant-garde symphonic death metal. I must say they totally nail it on this album. They blend their symphonic influences perfectly with their melodic death metal perfectly. The orchestrations actually make the music heavier like when the music just breaks down into the orchestra, then the riffs come in and it makes some brutal and beautiful ear candy. I'm not really a fan of melodic death metal, but these two guitarists have a pretty unique sound, which has a lot has to be the less conventional style they play. Plus both guitarists are on vocals, one being the clean and the other being harsh. Both are great vocalists, especially the clean vocals which is rare in extreme metal. Though I don't really focus on lyrics, I really like the lyrics for this album. It's not Satanic, senseless Christian bashing (though that's kind of what The Vampire of Nazareth is, but how metaphorical it is makes it phenomenal), typical occult and violence themed. Which makes this band and album actually "classy" hence the spot on orchestra too. I think this band has been so underrated throughout their career, and this album will most likely bring in a larger audience. This album and Septicflesh in general are totally worth checking out, especially if you dig less conventional metal.
