4.0 out of 5 stars A nice little smoker
I found this smoker to be great. I am not a pro, so take my opinion as such. I bought this last week and put it together in about a 1/2 hour. The only problem I had was that a flimsy weld on the control panel broke, which meant it did not hook onto the bottom of the smoker neatly. It was nothing a little electrical tape could not fix, and was probably my fault for...

1.0 out of 5 stars Runs way too hot to use as a "smoker"
I bought one of these summer 2005. This unit runs way too hot to use as a smoker (easily 250-300 degrees F). I even got a replacement regulator from the mfctr, but both ran too hot. I've had some success controlling temperature with valve on LP tank and a C clamp on the gas hose, but only limited luck. I've tried using an electric hot plate burner, but that only worked in...

I found this smoker to be great. I am not a pro, so take my opinion as such. I bought this last week and put it together in about a 1/2 hour. The only problem I had was that a flimsy weld on the control panel broke, which meant it did not hook onto the bottom of the smoker neatly. It was nothing a little electrical tape could not fix, and was probably my fault for forcing it. I plan on fixing it with a bolt and nut later this week. The rest of the unit looks well built.

As far as smoking, it did great. I put some garlic and water in the water pan, a mix of apple and mesquite in the wood chip bin, and put the smoker on low. As long as I had the vent wide open it stayed at 175 F. If I closed the vent the temp got up to 200 F.

The whole chicken I cooked was great. After four hours of smoking on my back patio, the chicken was moist and had a delicious hint of BBQ. It was smoking pretty good for a couple of hours. My wife had doubts about me buying a smoker. Now she has a BBQ menu planned for next week.

All in all I would recommend this to a friend. It is easy to use and keeping the heat consistent throughout the smoking is very easy with the propane controls and the vent.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for the price, March 30, 2007
This review is from: The Great Outdoors Gas Smoker (Lawn & Patio)
This a very basic smoker. It is well built. Easy to assemble w/ good instructions. Not much information on the actual smoking process but the internet is full of information.

No information on how to adjust the vent to make it run cooler or hotter. Do not think it should matter w/ gas. It might just regulate the amount of smoke. I leave mine 1/2 open.

Runs to hot for a smoker when set as the instructions recommended, gas valve 1.5 turns open. I have mine less than 1/3 of a turn open to achieve 225deg. It took some trial and error to figure out how to get the temp low but once you figure it out the gas smoker works great.

Would have been 5 stars if knob on the smoker was able to adjust the temp low enough. I keep mine pegged on low.

5.0 out of 5 stars Smokin with the Pro's, July 5, 2006

I have been wanting a smoker for a long time and have looked at several.I liked the looks of this unit and could not be happier with the results. I smoked baby back ribs and they were fabulous. I have used it three times and the results were the same fantastic. I talked my grandson into buying one, thats what I think of the smoker.

It assembles easily and is quite attractive on my patio. I just purchased a cover to keep it protected from the sweltering Texas climate. R.F.O'Hara

5.0 out of 5 stars Just What I Needed, June 2, 2007

I got this grill because I had been using a regular gas grill cooking using one burner on the lowest setting. It worked great, but wanted something easier...this thing was perfect. Easy to access the smoker box and water pan, plus the multiple levels of racks is great for loading it up. I wanted a gas smoker because there's no charcoal mess and it's easier to keep the temps regulated.

I did noticed that the smoker runs fairly hot even at the lowest settings. I was able to get mine around 200 steady opening the propane tank just a quarter twist and then setting the damper most of the way open and dial between Med and Low. I would probably recommend the wider version of this smoker as it would probably fit a whole rack of ribs. I had to cut mine in half...see pics:

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Starter Smoker, May 14, 2007
This review is from: The Great Outdoors Gas Smoker (Lawn & Patio)
I did have a charcoal smoker for many years and enjoyed it....but hated the charcoal and the inability to control the heat more precisly. I decide to buy this smoker since it was propane and held a little more food than my charcoal smoker. I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it went together, quality build, and overall ease of use. I have gone crazy smoking meat now almost every other weekend. Tri-tip, pork loin, Baby back ribs, and whole chickens. I only wish I had purchased the larger model because my family can't get enough. This is an excellent model for those who want to try smoking to get their feet wet...and it's not that expensive. Buy it, buy it, buy it, you won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT Cooker, May 14, 2007
This review is from: The Great Outdoors Gas Smoker (Lawn & Patio)
I think every household that enjoys cooking should own one of these. Very well made, and a great way to cook just about anything, whether you use wood, for a smoky flavor, or just use it as a slow cooker.

I have used it to make everything from smoked cheese or shrimp (about 15-20 min,) to pulled pork (8-12 hours) and this cooker maintains a constsnt temp. Wind can affect the flame, but I've never had a big problem with that, and I've been using mine for 2 years now.

Absolutely one of the best culinary investments I've made.

I bought one for friend as a housewarming present and they are thrilled with it.

A wheeled cart to place the cooker and the propane tank is something to be considered, otherwise it is a little awkward to move around. I very easily made one from 2x3's, plywood, and swivel casters.

4.0 out of 5 stars great outdoor smoker, July 4, 2007

I would recommend it to everyone. Food is delicious. Weve cooked a whole chicken and pork loin. As you know, a smoker takes a while to cook, but its well worth the wait. You wont be disappointed.

wanted a propane smoker and this little jewel fit the bill, in price, size, quality and workmanship !!!! With just the 2 of us we can smoke a complete meal all at once, meat and a potato and veggie and taste is out of this world....I don't see how you could go wrong with it and if you think you need more space I see that they have a larger one you can buy...the only improvement I can see is adding one more shelf ......

5.0 out of 5 stars Smoken' Hot!, July 19, 2008

I got this smoker for my husband at Christmas and he claims it's the best present he's ever received. It's great for simply doing a small amount of food for two people or a huge amount for 4th of July parties. All of our neighbors salivate when this things fired up, pumping irresistible aromas across the block.

His only complaint is that a full rack of ribs is hard to place in comfortably. He usually chops several in half. Use a bread pan with punctured foil for smoking chips rather than the small smoker box that comes with it for best results. The manual that comes with contains basic information but it's best to go online to some easily found expert websites for hints and tips.

Foil line the drip pan for much easier clean up. We've gotten rave compliments on our smoked food from this!

4.0 out of 5 stars Suggestion to keep temperature down., February 5, 2008
This review is from: The Great Outdoors Gas Smoker (Lawn & Patio)
To those who are having a hard time controlling the temperature, I recommend putting a needle valve(available at hardware stores)where the hose attaches to the regulator. The needle valve allows you to fine tune the amount of gas going to the smoker. After doing this I had no trouble controlling the temperature to make summer sausage.
