These reviews were very interesting to me because I just purchased 4 copies of this book to have within our family. My paternal grandfather's brother was my Uncle Max Hall who married Rubyleah (who happened to be his first cousin by the way) and they ended up divorcing later because he was having an affair (this is all hear-say from my grandmother) but she still remembers Rubyleah and loved her and her novel has remained one of her favorites even still. Getting ready to start it myself...

I live in the town that this fictional novel was based upon and I tell everyone I can about this book. The major disasters that propel this story along actually happened! Although the facts are not nearly as not as spellbinding as Rubea's version, this book is a masterpiece that captures old florida perfectly and has become a treasure of mine. Highly recommend!

I purchased this book as a gift for my wife, who is related to Rubylea Hall on her Maternal mother's side. They were from Two Egg, Florida, very near Greenwood, just NE of Mariana, Florida. At any rate, I found myself opening the book and beginning to read it. I had to buy another book for myself so we wouldn't fight over it, lol.
The book is very well written and Ms Hall develops the characters to the extent that you feel like you know each one. You get lost in the story, the history, the family. I highly recommend this book to anybody who is interested in antebellum history of the 1830s-40s. Just outstanding and very interesting to see what it was like to live without the conveniences of today. I cannot say enough good things about this work.
