one of the baddest artists ever who truly had an idenity and how he wanted his music to sound and be heard as. all of his classic number ones are represented here. his voice truly had an emotion about it that very few acts can truly get to. and his story telling and the way he would plead and follow line after line was very real and raw and yet accessible enough for all to relate to it. these songs are classics.

First and foremost: This is a compilation of Cash #1 songs - not a greatest hits, not a "Best of..." but a collection of number ones. The songs he sung that reached number one. It is also not a bunch of extended versions for albums - i.e it is what is. (Remember most country songs of the 60's/70's and probably still do had/have to be under 3-3.5 minutes to get played and preferably under 3 minutes and closer to 2.5 minutes.)

Perhaps, John's signature song I Walk The Line starts us off and then a lesser known There You Go. The very early hit: Ballad of A Teenage Queen, followed by the philosophical Guess Things Happen That Way to the more intimate telling of: The Ways O A Woman In Love. We also get the more well known Cash classics: Ring of Fire, Folsom Prison Blues and the gospel flavored: Daddy Sang Bass (That also features The Statler Brothers singing backing vocals). Perhaps A Boy Named Sue got him the national non country following in the early 70's (me thinks.) His gritty soul baring country classic: Sunday Morning Coming Down written by superb singer-songwriter-movie actor Kris Kristofferson who also wrote both the Sammi Smith classic: Help Me make It Through The Night as well as the country standard classic by Ray Price: For The Good Times.

We have the gutty and wrenching Flesh and Blood. Then a late 60's or early 70's song: One Piece At A Time - the telling of an auto worker stealing an auto piece at at time. There Ain't No Good Chain Gang is a very strong classic duet with Waylon Jennings. Before we end his Ghost Riders In The Sky classic and then The Highwayman: A legendary song because Johnny joins along with: Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings and the a fore mentioned Kris Kristofferson.

Although not all of my favorite Johnny Cash songs are included, these are his most popular recordings, and they are all great! If you buy this one, get ready to time-travel back about 4or 5 decades and remember what you were doing when these songs became #1 hits!

Again, I gave this Cd to my son who enjoys mostly rap and rock and roll. He was very happy to receive this collection of some of the best music ever written and or sung.

In celebration of Johnny Cash's 80th birthday, Sony's Legacy division has released a tributary live show (We Walk the Line) and a quartet of compilations covering his #1 hits, duets, country, and gospel songs. The titles are cleverly punctuated (The Greatest: Duets) to suggest these are songs from one of country greatest artists, rather than definitive collections of the named slice of Cash's catalog. And that's a good idea, since reducing Cash's greatest country or gospel songs to collections of fourteen titles is sure to engender argument. Instead, these collections provide a good sample of the riches in Cash's enormous catalog.

This set collects titles that topped either the Billboard or Cashbox charts, forgoing several that topped the Canadian country chart without doing so in the U.S. The collection draws a diverse arc from Cash's stark, reverb-laden Sun productions of the `50s to his last #1, "Highwayman," sung with Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson. Most of the titles will be familiar to even casual Cash fans, though a few of the Cashbox hits, "The Way of a Woman in Love," "What Do I Care" and a duet with Jennings on ""There Ain't No Good Chain Gang" remain less exposed. Tracks 1-5 are mono, the rest stereo ("A Boy Named Sue" is presented in unbleeped form), and the booklet includes lengthy new liner notes by Anthony DeCurtis. [©2012 Hyperbolium]
