Editorial Reviews

The Greatest Songs of The Eighties is the next release in a best-selling series of tribute albums of popular music which includes The Greatest Songs of The Fifties, The Greatest Songs Of The Sixties and The Greatest Songs Of The Seventies whose cumulative sales, along with Ultimate Manilow have surpassed 5 million units worldwide. The Greatest Songs of The Eighties continues the productive and successful reunion between Manilow and Clive Davis, Arista founder and Chief Creative Officer, Sony BMG. Davis has been Manilow's hitmaking collaborator on virtually all his recordings, since they first worked together on "Mandy". His debut #1 single, as the first artist signed to Arista by Davis in 1974. The two produced The Greatest Songs of The Fifties, The Greatest Songs Of The Sixties and The Greatest Songs Of The Seventies together, and that magic has carried over to the new album as well.

I definetely recommend this cd for any fan of Manilow or the eighties.
Lachlan Wallace
The whole CD ends up sounding like a second-rate lounge act and all the songs are boring.
Amanda L. Davis
B sings certain songs with so much feeling that I can feel them in my heart.

I've loved BM songs even since they started to come out during the 70's. I must say that I have almost every album in CD now and I was hoping this new deliver of 80's renditions would be kind of good... but no no no... My dear Barry, I don't think you'll have the Time Of Your Life with this CD... these songs aren't for you or your vocal tone... too low... too slow... I'm sure there are much better songs that you could've chosen. The only cuts I like are ISLANDS IN THE STREAMS (because of the duo with Reba) and I JUST CALLED TO SAY I LOVE YOU (because of the samba-like feel you've put into it which makes it kind of interesting).

Better luck next time Barry!

With such a blockbuster set of eighties material and the amazing Barry Manilow's pipes and creative touch, I had high hopes for this album.

* sigh *

He's been in Vegas too long, I'm afraid. Unfortunately instead of doing these songs justice, they are anemic, watered-down, lounge-y (yet well-produced) versions of the originals. Great for weddings or elevator muzak or a Vegas show. You reviewers that are giving this album 5 stars, have you even *heard* the originals??

I ask you all, did these iconic songs need to be remade? Credit Barry for picking outstanding ballads but give me Richard Marx, Phil Collins, Peter Cetera, Cindy Lauper, Steve Perry, George Michael, et. al. before this. This really has the feel of a fishing-for-cash movie sequel.

Summary... all the edge and awesomeness of the originals is leveled out on this Prozac pill of an album. There's little emotion in these renditions, in Barry's baritone and especially in the cheese muzak. No bueno. I'll always be a fan of Barry's but save your bones and buy the originals and/or his greatest hits unless you are a Barry fanatic. Three stars, only because it's Barry and the album is produced well.

These are not good covers at all. The whole CD ends up sounding like a second-rate lounge act and all the songs are boring. I hated the whole album from start to finish. I also didn't like how slowed down a lot of the songs were from the original.

Barry go ahead!

Alberto.

I grew up with these songs when I was in college and was wondering how I would like Barry's rendition of them. I'm wondering no longer - they are terrific! His version of "Open Arms" and "Never Gonna Give You Up" are my favorites on the cd and among the most played on my Zune.

The neat thing about this is that I am actually hearing the words rather than them being just background noise. The words are terrific and when he sings them, you can close your eyes and imagine yourself there with him.

Now that Barry's done with the "Greatest Songs" series, it's time for some new material. Love ya Barry!

This could have been so much better. I think Clive Davis pushed these almost-unknown songs on Barry, and he just didn't have the guts to tell Clive "No." Most of the songs are just awful. The arrangements are wrong, and honestly, Barry shouldn't even attempt some of them. Not at all worth your consideration. Don't waste your money.

I bought this barry manilow album for my mom for christmas. She has listened to the entire album and said it was great. It only cost me a few dollars on amazon. Less than $7 even after including the shipping cost. I was originally unsure about purchasing cd's on amazon. But now i know that the products are very good. Thanks again.

I'm pro-Graham Nash myself *S* and I think I know just what you are saying. I think what it is is that those of us who are most enthusiastic shouldn't take it personally if not everyone likes a glowing review. It's easy to say to yourself 'What have they got against this? I love it!' and you... Read More
