Book Description

December 27, 2007
Discover the ancient Chinese secret to a long, healthy life-with just three cups of green tea per day.

The Green Tea Book has been a trusted resource for almost a decade. Now, chemist Lester A. Mitscher and health writer Victoria Dolby Toews update their ground-breaking work with the latest scientific information. The "natural medicine" in green tea is polyphenols. These phytonutrients are powerful antioxidants, and Dr. Mitscher and Toews explore the research on green tea, explaining its many healing properties. You'll learn how drinking as few as three cups of green tea day a day may help:

- reduce the risk of certain cancers and mitigate the side effects of cancer treatment;
- promote a healthy heart;
- boost immunity and detoxify the body;
- support the body's natural antiaging processes;
- prevent inflammation of teeth and gums, aid digestion, and so much more.

The Green Tea Book guides readers to those teas highest in polyphenols, offering suggestions on choosing teas that one will savor and enjoy. This one- stop resource will have readers convinced: taking one's medicine has never tasted so good.

Amazon.com Review

Known as China's Fountain of Youth, green tea has been recognized as a powerful healer in preventing cancer and slowing the aging process. Since its first recorded use 4,000 years ago, people have been drinking green tea for its health-preserving and revitalizing power. Lester Mitscher and Victoria Dolby explore the beverage's health claims in The Green Tea Book. Using scientific research, The Green Tea Book examines each benefit, from the prevention of cancer and heart disease to simulating mental clarity and reducing cholesterol levels. Polyphenols, naturally occurring compounds found in green tea, supplement the body's antioxidant levels and are the primary mechanism by which green tea prevents the formation of cancer. In addition to the health benefits, Mitscher and Dolby present the history of green tea as well as guidelines for choosing, brewing, and storage. The Green Tea Book is the complete guide to green tea and will help you understand why it works and how you can use it for both its health-promoting qualities and its great taste. --Gretel Hakanson --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From Booklist

Mitscher and Dolby's main point is that scientific investigations, particularly during the past 10 to 15 years, support the healthful and medicinal value attributed to green tea. Studies specifically corroborating the book's arguments that green tea can help prevent certain types of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and dental caries appear among the 17 pages of references, many of them to topflight scientific and medical journals. That green tea helps mitigate the unpleasant effects of radiation and chemotherapy in the treatment of cancer is another revelation. A general history of tea offers enlivening relief from the large amount of hard information, and tables clarify such things as the amounts of caffeine and theophylline in various drinks (note to the chronically anxious: 125 cups of tea at one sitting constitutes a fatal dosage). I found such wonderful and informative information in this book. From general health benefits of drinking green tea to chapters dedicated to specific health problems such as different cancers, dental health, cardio, etc. Everything is backed-up with study and research results so you know actual numbers. And if it's not a fact, they let you know. I drink a lot more green tea now!

My version of this book was published in 1996. So it includes only the earliest studies to be done on the health benefits of tea, particularly the media darling green tea.

It's not a bad thing because a lot was already understood about nutrition in the 90s. A lot more studies have been done on tea, substantiating some miraculous capabilities.

But this book offers a reader-friendly synopsis of the many different aspects of dietary disease prevention, mainly with your favorite beverage: tea.

Green Tea Believer.... March 13, 2012

I read the original issue of this book back in the 90's and have been taking a Green tea supplement (daily) ever since. Whether I drink Green tea or not, I always make sure to take the supplement along with my regular multi vitamins, flax oil, etc. My immune system has always been strong and I eat fairly healthy, but after re-reading this book I re-affirmed my belief in the benefits of Green tea.
If you care about your health, READ this book! The historical background of cultivating and trading tea is a great part of explaining why it was such a precious cargo.
It was the first time, the 'Boston Tea Party" really took on a new meaning for me. Read the book and you will appreciate why tea has always been and still is so very important to our health.
