Customer Reviews

It is comprehensive and laid out in a very user-friendly style.

From a high-level perspective (if you're not the one slinging the hammer and raw materials) this may be true.

Good book, "state of the art" review from green roof knowledge.

This is a great book to get excited about green roofs. Nice pictures, well researched, all around nicely done. The only issue I have with it however, is that the title gives the impression that it's a guide to design, installation and maintenance. From a high-level perspective (if you're not the one slinging the hammer and raw materials) this may be true. But if you're a DIY'er (like me) you'll probably feel totally starved for details, dimensions and diagrams. There is one REALLY basic image of the layering that goes on, but it's an appetizer to a main course that never gets served. I'm going to keep this book because (for what it is) it's really nice. But If you're looking for "A Professional Guide to Design, Installation and Maintenance", try something else - these are not the droids you're looking for. Okay, maybe that's not a good closing line because in the film, they WERE the droids they were looking for where this book isn't... eh, I enjoy the reference too much to change it though. Best luck on YOUR green roof!

Think of The Green Roof Manual like the Joy of Cooking. The classic cookbook took the kitchen in a new direction. The Green Roof Manual: A Professional Guide to Design, Installation and Maintenance has the same potential for designers, roofing contractors, engineers and urban planners who are considering green roofs. Authors Edmund Snodgrass and Linda McIntyre have brought their talents to the table. Snodgrass previously co-authored, with his wife Lucie, Green Roof Plants: A Resource and Planting Guide. His curiosity, common sense and years of experience are apparent in his current effort. McIntyre, a talented writer, with her own impressive background from law to languages, has edited and organized the information in sections that are concise and readable. There are five comprehensive chapters: Basics, Anatomy of Green Roof Assembly, State of the Industry, Designing and Building Your Green Roof and Maintaining You Green Roof. Each chapter is preceded by an outline of pertinent Key Points. There is also a valuable Resources section plus an extensive bibliography.

The North American green roof industry is moving beyond infancy through trial and error. Mistakes can be avoided by reading The Green Roof Manual. There is no one-stop shopping for a successful green roof, and it is imprudent to presume what works in Chicago will work in Dallas. There is, however, plenty of common ground. The plant palette might be different but the structural checklist will be similar with regional tweaking.

Many cookbooks have come along in the last seventy years (most are forgettable) but there are a lot of tattered old copies of The Joy of Cooking still in kitchens. The Green Roof Manual will be a go-to reference for many years.

I was looking for a book to teach me how to design and install a living roof on my home. This book is for contractors and for homeowners who plan to use a contractor. It is not a "how-to" manual for the do it yourself person.
