Book Description

John Ottway has found the job at the end of the world, working as a hunter for an oil-camp on the North Slope of Alaska. It’s brutal, cold, and isolated, and there’s little he needs to do but wait for the day when he has the courage to end his life, as he plans to, some day, “at a time to be determined.” But the plane that ferries him and the other camp workers between the Slope and civilization crashes in the tundra, leaving Ottway alone with a handful of terrified survivors to face a punishing landscape, wolves who see them as an invading pack, and, ultimately, the prospect of a death he didn’t choose in its most insistent, inexorable form. As he battles to save the lives of those with him, he looks into the darkness of an unforgiving nature and must weigh the abysses in himself and the wrongs he carries against what he leaves behind, and choose whether his own life is worth saving, or not.

What critics say about the movie:

“Prepare to be devastated… the equivalent of a wet finger in a hot socket… nerve-frying suspense… one of the most captivating studies of shared peril… explores the dark shadows of the male psyche…” — Rex Reed, New York Observer

"…a stripped-down, elemental tale of survival in brutal circumstances, as blunt and effective — and also, at times, as lyrical — as a tale by Jack London or Ernest Hemingway…." — AO Scott, The New York Times

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book February 24, 2012

While The Grey book has everything that made the film the great it also has something else going for it, it is it's own piece of literature. The film was adapted from the short story, "Ghost Walker" and it would have been easy for Ian Mackenzie Jeffers to just expand the novel with the same plot points the film added, but he doesn't. For example, where the film has to rely heavily on expository dialogue between the survivors in order to get the point across, the book relies mostly on the inner monologue of the hero himself, Ottway. In fact, the survivors barely ever say more than a few words to each other. The book also fleshes out and tweeks Ottway's backstory without killing the mystique and grit that Nesson brought to the character on screen. Through Ottway's bleak put poignant Heminway-esque take on the world, Jeffers expands on the theme of man's struggle to face their human condition with dignity and grace. In short, I couldn't happier with the book and it decidedly literary, not cinematic, focus on storytelling.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Read February 22, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
If you only read one thing this year make it The Grey. I've been waiting to read it since the movie came out, which was brilliant. What I love about it is that it's an easy, great read that keeps you involved and at the same time it speaks to some of the most basic questions of life and death. Absolutely worth it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Smashing! February 22, 2012
By Callum
Format:Kindle Edition
Having seen the movie (which I would highly recommend) I decided to jump straight into the book and I was not disappointed. The plot line and intensity of the characters is every bit as engaging as the big screen version. This is not just man meets wolf in the wilderness or another survival yarn, but a much deeper presentation on the subject of mortality, personal struggles and morality . That being said, in homage to Jack London, it is both gripping and very enjoyable.

Incredible mood, tone, and imagery throughout. But continuous spelling errors took me out of it. It was a solid read though

2.0 out of 5 stars Redundent.
Alot of repeating of wolves and cold, does not seem to get into the thoughts of the main character. Just alot of descriptions of the same thing over and over. Read more

The theme, main plot and ending do not differ greatly from the movie. There are some differences with the main character's interactions with the other survivors of the plane crash. Read more
