Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

In this final entry in Gidwitz’s trilogy, the author once again mashes together unsugarcoated versions of classic fairy tales. Twins Jorinda and Joringel suffer gruesome fates at the hands of their stepfather—naturally—but that’s only the beginning. Once they dispatch him, they stumble into other well-known fairy tales, such as Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty, as well as some less familiar stories, like The Juniper Tree. The metafictional approach can get distracting; along with regular interactions with the reader, Gidwitz eventually shares a pizza with, and reads his previous two novels to, Jorinda and Joringel. But interested readers won’t be there for the narrative structure. No, they’ll show up for the awesomely dark stories, full of beheadings, corpses, tyrants, murder, and terrible adults who treat children awfully until those children are empowered to fight back, taking the narrative power into their own hands to tell the stories with the happy endings they want to hear. Fans of the series will eagerly pore over this volume, which can comfortably stand on its own. Grades 4-7. --Sarah Hunter

More About the Author

Adam Gidwitz grew up in Baltimore. Now he lives in Brooklyn and teaches kids large and slightly less large at Saint Ann's School. Adam only writes about what he's experienced personally. So, while all of the strange, hilarious, and frightening things in A TALE DARK AND GRIMM really did happen to Hansel and Gretel, they also happened to Adam. Of course, if you've ever had a childhood, they've probably happened to you, too.

This book is simply wonderful.
Like the others before it, it re-imagines a set of dark fairy tales and links them in new ways to tell an entirely different story.
This one begins with the story of The Juniper Tree and ties into Joringa and Joringel. From there, it goes sideways in the most unexpected and interesting ways.
I'm not going to be too specific because I don't want to spoil the story for anyone; however be aware that this tale is just as bloody and violent as the previous ones. It deals with betrayal, cruelty, murder, and the freedom to know and tell your own story, and how powerful that can really be.
Through the tears and heartbreak is always a welcome dose of real warmth and solid advice regarding family, bravery, and true strength.

I proudly nominate this series to be on everyone's book shelf. Buy it and see.

This book, just wow. I... I... I don't know what to say. Words cannot describe this magnificent book. If there was an infinity sign for stars on this book, I would rate it Infinity. Loved it. I am eleven years old, just turned like last week, and I recommend this book for children 9or 10 preferring on how mature they are to read all these books. I loved it and will always. Now this series of books has become my all time number ones. Please buy, totally worth it, and read, also totally worth it. Thank you Adam for writing these books!!!!

I loved this book and I recommend this book to anybody who loves blood. It is sweet and shows you.how important family is. I am now feeling so blessed that I have a family so wonderful. This book teaches us life lessons and it taught me that you make your own life story. It taught me that even children can make a difference. And, that if you believe in yourself, that anything is possible. Read this amazing book and feel the love too!

My son has read all of these books and really enjoys them. We had to purchase this immediately when it was released because he could not wait to read it. Wish this author would write more as my son has his nose on these books constantly until he has finished them. As a Mom, I love to see my son reading without me having to remind him.

I love this book!!! One of the best series I have ever read, I couldn't put it down. I almost always read a book once, but this book is too good to read only 5 times. I'm 12 and I finished this book in about 2 weeks. A must read! :)

Loved this book! Especially the words from the Wiser. Kept my struggling students engaged--every single one made grade level by the years end.

(By Don's daughter)

There are people who love fairy tales with a passion. There are people who love scary, creepy stories that keep them lying awake at night. And there are people who may not love either but do love to laugh.

Adam Gidwitz's Grimm series is for all of them.

This final installment features brother and sister Jorinda and Joringel, who survive bad parents, evil monarchs, magical potions, and their own deaths, among other horrific situations unsuitable for children. And yes, I said THEIR OWN DEATHS. If you want to know how they did it, read the books! And in Gidwitz's wacky yet meaningful fashion, they learn a few lessons along the way.

I thought this when I first read "A Tale Dark and Grimm", and I'll say it now: Gidwitz's narrating makes this book. He can't go more than a few pages without intruding into the story, but he's so side-splittingly funny about it that you don't mind. For example, he jumps in to explain the real meaning of the name "Cinderella". It's "Toilet Cleaner". However, he can be poignant as well: ". . . until you bathe at the source of the tears, you will never be clean." Up to now, this is stuff you've probably already seen in the previous two books (the other being "In a Glass Grimmly"), but Gidwitz takes it to a whole new level here. (Hint: it involves a sojourn into the life of a schoolteacher and, technically, more than one narrator.)

I was also impressed by the way the tales tie into each other. Jorinda and Joringel are apart for most of the first half of the book, but Gidwitz is able to switch from one to the other easily and at just the right moment, usually a cliffhanger. The different adventures never feel forced, just riveting and clever.

The book is very well written and my 5th grader loves it. They read the other books in the series at school and he talked about it non stop. This is the first of the books I have read with him. The subject matter is pretty gruesome but he is very engaged and can't wait to read and report on what he has read.
