Book Description

The Groaning Bridge is based on the legend of 15th century knight to King Henry VIII, Sir Goddard Oxenbridge.

Sir Goddard was a hero at the Battle of Flodden Field where English forces were victorious over the Scots under King James IV. In the aftermath, however, he found himself far from home and facing starvation with no food sources available. Rumors of cannibalism spread and the legend of The Brede Giant were born.

Sir Goddard's reign of terror began soon after his return home. The children of the village were his victims, their disappearance attributed to running away, or attacks by wild animals from the nearby forest.

When a young boy named Edward is abducted, there is a witness. His older sister, Hannah, tells others about Sir Goddard. Yet, no one believes her, including her parents.

In an act of desperation, Hannah enlists the help of her friends to stop the Giant and save Edward. In a drunken stupor, the giant collapses on a bridge. It is there, the children attack and kill him using a wooden saw, leaving stains on the bridge that remain until this day.

However, this is only the beginning of our story, as a descendent of Sir Goddard returns to Brede House.

Unknown to the new residents, the giant's victims still reside there.

I couldn't wait to get this one, and I wasn't disappointed!

The story is an absolute page turner, filled with history, a loving relationship, and things that go bump in the "knight". I read it in one night, refusing to put it down until I found out...well, I won't write a spoiler...everything I needed to know.

The only problem I had was that the stilted old English of the historic period (lack of contractions) carried through to the modern day story. But, this single small issue was certainly not enough to spoil the story behind it, which was excellent!

A recommended read.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good story, needed an editorial eye April 13, 2013

Enjoyed the story but there were many wrong word usages and it needed some editorial input. I was thrown out of the tale a few times by errors but overall, the premise was good and the story intriguing.
