Feigned umbrage at being given such an item for a birthday aside, what do we have here?

The author of this breezy read - Geoff Tibballs - is also the author of a range of other works whose titles include The Seniors Survival Guide: New Tricks for Old Dogs, Senior Jokes (the ones you can remember), Seriously Senior Moments (Or, Have You Bought This Book Before?) and Crap Teams. Now with a literary CV like that you should know what you are getting here. The man didn't work into the wee small hours considering the deeper philosophical points of this book nor did he spend years in some musty library poring over rare and fragile documents to uncover historical truth. No, what he did was think of what title he could cobble together enough ideas around to create a book which would find its place at novelty bookstores and gift lounges.

And as a piece of subject matter old complaining men are hardly new or novel. But they are fertile ground. The author knows this and has thrown together some of my - and probably your - favourite whines of old men. Darn near everything is covered from the behaviour of the children of others, Z list celebrities, reality TV shows, foreigners and people who jump the queue at shops. Now in fairness many of these complaints are not just confined to old men and that actually helps the humour to be more connective. The font, the way the work is set out in broadly connected sets of complaints, the use of quotes from various notables to illustrate further the point being made and not least the amusing cover photograph all help to make this a fine gift for the ... older male person in your family.
