Review

"An indispensable resource, clearly and concisely written with expert authority."

About the Author

Sasha Davies is a cheesemonger in Portland, Oregon, and serves on the board of the American Cheese Society.

Davies started her cheese career in New York City as an apprentice affineur in the cheese caves of Artisanal Premium Cheese, going on to manage the caves at the venerable Murray's Cheese and work as a resident cheese expert for Marlow & Sons. Her interest in cheese led her to embark on a four-month tour of forty American artisan cheesemakers, a project chronicled at cheesebyhand.com.

Davies has taught classes at the French Culinary Institute and the Cheese School of San Francisco. Her food writing has appeared on thestrongbuzz.com, in the Diner Journal, and in the cheese-focused magazine Culture.

I love this book! Davies has done her homework, and it shows. The book is a wonderfully comprehensive guide to the distinctive cheeses of the West Coast, all told in Sasha's easily digestible (no pun intended), fun-to-read, lighthearted voice. Great as a reference or to read through. I'm buying it as gifts!

I expected a reference book on West Coast Cheeses and got a whole lot more. Not only did the author lay out the basics in a thorough yet engaging manner, she managed to get me to read through the descriptions as if I was reading a novel. And the descriptions of the creameries made me want to hop in the car and go taste the cheeses in their "native environment". Kudos!

I tried unsuccessfully to figure out how to use this book well. Cheeses are listed by type and the particular name of that type cheese chosen for it by the cheese maker. I thought it better to order the book by 1. state/region, 2. a list of the dairies and then, 3. types of cheese each makes. You cannot look up a dairy, find out where it is, and what it makes without thumbing all through the book.
I would not recommend this book.

For a complete information source on defining cheese by many types and where so many are produced on the West coast, it would be difficult to find an equal. It is clearly written in an interesting format. An item that is well worth the price.
