Book Description

November 30, 2010 The Guild
Internet phenomenon The Guild comes to comics, courtesy of series creator, writer, and star Felicia Day (Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog)! Chronicling the hilarious on- and offline lives of a group of Internet role-playing gamers, the Knights of Good, The Guild has become a cult hit, and is the winner of numerous awards from SXSW, YouTube, Yahoo, and the Streamys. Now, Day brings the wit and heart of the show to this graphic-novel prequel. In this origin tale of the Knights of Good, we learn about Cyd's life before joining the guild, how she became Codex, her awful breakup with boyfriend Trevor, and how she began to meet the other players who would eventually become her teammates.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great backstory 'graphic novel' for fans of 'The Guild' December 13, 2010
By BeccaM
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
If you like and enjoy the web-series "The Guild", this graphic novel provides a fun and amusing look into the backstory of the characters and the formation of the eponymous Knights of Good guild itself. Originally released as a three-issue limited run from Dark Horse comics, this new book includes all three issues as well as each cover variant, plus some bonus material in the back (not seen before).

Although now sponsored by Microsoft (for distribution) and Sprint, Felicia Day's original production nevertheless represents true independent spirit, made by people more interested in entertaining (and in being hilariously funny) than in turning a buck. That said, even though I can get episodes free from Zune online, I still make it a point to buy these kinds of products as my way of supporting artistic work. (Already have The Guild Season 4 DVD on pre-order.)

"The Guild" will appeal most to people who know and are familiar with MMORPGs, and in fact the game depicted in the series is obviously a very thinly disguised variant of "World of Warcraft" -- which the creator, Felicia Day, is said to play avidly. (They don't use the actual game for copyright reasons.) The characters comprising the Knights of Good guild are dysfunctional, socially stunted, and borderline disturbed -- but this just makes their antics all the funnier. If you're not sure this is for you, check out some clips at watchtheguild(dot)com.

Without giving anything away, we learn why Cyd Shepherd (Felicia's character) was seeing a psychiatrist, why she gave up playing the violin, and about her very first experiences in an online fantasy role-playing game. As she learns her way around the online world, she meets (for the first time) all the game-obsessed lunatics who'd eventually form the Knights of Good: Vork, Tinkerballa, Clara, Bladezz, and Zabu.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fun extension of the show, but so-so art July 3, 2011
By terra
Format:Paperback
This is a prequel for the web series of the same name that establishes the back story for Cyd's entry into the massively multi-player online (MMO) game world and the formation of the titular guild. I found the story entertaining, and the characters were fairly consistent with their show counterparts. The story also taps into the psychological draw of such games and why they can become so addicting - however, the goal here isn't to condemn, only to lovingly poke fun. Any fan of the show would enjoy this. I think this would also make a decent introduction for someone new to the series and completely unfamiliar with the MMO game concept which is key to the story, as it explains the game from Cyd's perspective as a new player.

Unfortunately Zaboo's tic of adding "'d" to words came across as annoying and overused in print. That would be a minor gripe compared to the art, however, which is what really brings the rating down for me. Some of the frames are great and really bring the characters to life, and I like the style contrast between the real world and the game world. But the drawings as a whole just weren't consistent. Sometimes proportions were off or faces seemed distorted. I would really love to see another Guild comic in the future, with better art.
