5.0 out of 5 stars Great backstory 'graphic novel' for fans of 'The Guild' December 13, 2010
By BeccaM
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
If you like and enjoy the web-series "The Guild", this graphic novel provides a fun and amusing look into the backstory of the characters and the formation of the eponymous Knights of Good guild itself. Originally released as a three-issue limited run from Dark Horse comics, this new book includes all three issues as well as each cover variant, plus some bonus material in the back (not seen before).

Although now sponsored by Microsoft (for distribution) and Sprint, Felicia Day's original production nevertheless represents true independent spirit, made by people more interested in entertaining (and in being hilariously funny) than in turning a buck. That said, even though I can get episodes free from Zune online, I still make it a point to buy these kinds of products as my way of supporting artistic work. (Already have The Guild Season 4 DVD on pre-order.)

"The Guild" will appeal most to people who know and are familiar with MMORPGs, and in fact the game depicted in the series is obviously a very thinly disguised variant of "World of Warcraft" -- which the creator, Felicia Day, is said to play avidly. (They don't use the actual game for copyright reasons.) The characters comprising the Knights of Good guild are dysfunctional, socially stunted, and borderline disturbed -- but this just makes their antics all the funnier. If you're not sure this is for you, check out some clips at watchtheguild(dot)com.

Without giving anything away, we learn why Cyd Shepherd (Felicia's character) was seeing a psychiatrist, why she gave up playing the violin, and about her very first experiences in an online fantasy role-playing game. As she learns her way around the online world, she meets (for the first time) all the game-obsessed lunatics who'd eventually form the Knights of Good: Vork, Tinkerballa, Clara, Bladezz, and Zabu.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fun extension of the show, but so-so art July 3, 2011
By terra
Format:Paperback
This is a prequel for the web series of the same name that establishes the back story for Cyd's entry into the massively multi-player online (MMO) game world and the formation of the titular guild. I found the story entertaining, and the characters were fairly consistent with their show counterparts. The story also taps into the psychological draw of such games and why they can become so addicting - however, the goal here isn't to condemn, only to lovingly poke fun. Any fan of the show would enjoy this. I think this would also make a decent introduction for someone new to the series and completely unfamiliar with the MMO game concept which is key to the story, as it explains the game from Cyd's perspective as a new player.

Unfortunately Zaboo's tic of adding "'d" to words came across as annoying and overused in print. That would be a minor gripe compared to the art, however, which is what really brings the rating down for me. Some of the frames are great and really bring the characters to life, and I like the style contrast between the real world and the game world. But the drawings as a whole just weren't consistent. Sometimes proportions were off or faces seemed distorted. I would really love to see another Guild comic in the future, with better art.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read for Guild fans May 1, 2011
Format:Paperback
If you're a fan of the web series, you will love this. The graphic novel has the same wit and awkward humour as the series, with fantastic artwork. I really hope Felicia Day decides to write another.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just As Good As The Show April 27, 2011
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This comic is a prequel to the web series "The Guild." This has the same humor the show does, and you can almost hear the voices of the actors as you read this. A great read, I highly recommend this!

"It's an MMORPG. You make a character. Whatever you want."

For fans of the web-series, The Guild, this brief graphic novel is a prequel of sorts. Cyd Sherman is a violinist in the back row of an orchestra. Her boyfriend, a former member of the orchestra, is trying to start his own rock band and completely uses her. As Cyd grows more and more withdrawn, she reaches out to an MMO she bought on a whim. In the game, she is needed and successful.
The graphic novel has three "chapters", set off in a style similar to the webseries with Cyd/Codex sitting in front of her webcam and relating the day's events. While the chapters (and graphic novel itself) are short, the humor, the characters, and zany events are not truncated. The characters come off well, as good predecessors of their video incarnations. Cyd/Codex is our highlight as this is told from her point of view and is her "beginning" story. I can't tell you how sorry I felt for her, as she struggled with her self-esteem, her desire to be important and mean something, and with her inability to stand up to people, particularly her good-for-nothing, user boyfriend. The story is great; it makes complete sense why Cyd becomes more involved in the game. As she makes more friends and as her real life becomes more intolerable, she slowly becomes more and more involved in gaming life.
Other characters are brilliant as well. Zaboo, Vork, Clara, Bladezz, and Tinkerballa all appear and befriend Codex in interesting yet believable ways (people who are accustomed to some sort of online gaming or even forum life will be able to relate to this); all of their characters are believable predecessors. I enjoyed how Vork came off as keeping track of who owes him what (in order to get people to help him), while Tinkerballa charges gold.
