Editorial Reviews

The $100 Guitar Project In October of 2010, guitarists Nick Didkovsky and Chuck O'Meara bought a used $100 electric guitar online. They didn't know what it sounded like or if it even worked, but were charmed by its no-name vibe. After receiving the instrument, they contacted a few friends about writing and recording a piece on the guitar. Word spread quickly, and within weeks, the $100 Guitar Project was born. Over two years, sixty-five guitarists wrote and recorded a piece on the instrument, each passing the guitar on to the next player (the guitar traveled all over the USA, including Hawaii, and to western Europe as well). Stylistically, the players come from every corner of the guitar-playing world: classical to blues; jazz to country; rock to experimental. Donating their services to a good cause, a royalty on every sale of the $100 Guitar Project will be paid to CARE, a leading organization fighting global poverty. The 65 guitarists are: Andy Aledort, Greg Anderson, Ron Anderson, Joe Berger, Michael Bierylo, Biota, Blancah, Joe Bouchard, Bill Brovold, Phil Burk, Juan Parra Cancino, Marco Cappelli, Marty Carlson, Kobe Van Cauwenberghe, Rhys Chatham, Barry Cleveland, Nels Cline, Amy Denio, Jon Diaz, Nick Didkovsky, Thomas Dimuzio, Bruce Eisenbeil, Karl Evangelista, Janet Feder, Caroline Feldmeier, Ken Field, Fred Frith, Wiek Hijmans, Mark Hitt, Henry Kaiser, Raymond T. Kallas, Mike Keneally, Jesse Krakow, Jesse Kranzler, Mike Lerner, Taylor Levine, David Linaburg, Josh Lopes, Steve MacLean, Tom Marsan, Colin Marston, Ava Mendoza, Julia A. Miller, Roger C. Miller, James Moore, Chris Murphy, Chuck O'Meara, Marco Oppedisano, Kai Niggeman, Han-earl Park, Shawn Persinger is Prester John, Larry Polansky, Del Rey, Teisco Del Rey with Bob Spalding, Keith Rowe, Elliott Sharp, John Shiurba, Alex Skolnick, Mark Solomon, David Starobin, Mark Stewart, Hans Tammen, Matt Wilson, Bruce Zeines, and Zwerm.

5.0 out of 5 stars Guitarists unite to fight poverty January 13, 2013
Format:Audio CD
Disclaimer: I'm one of the executive producers, and am on one of the sixty-nine tracks of this two-disc set. Here's the deal: 100% of the artist royalties of this production, and a very large chunk of the record company take, are being paid to CARE, a leading organization fighting world poverty. For that reason alone, if you're interested in a very wide spectrum of contemporary expression on the guitar--BUY THESE DISCS! The cause is worthy.

The project began two years ago, when Nick Didkovsky and Chuck O'Meara bought a no-name electric guitar online for $100. As a lark, they came up with the idea of getting a number of their guitar-playing friends to write and record a short piece on the guitar. One thing led to another, and before long, there were sixty-nine tracks performed by 64 players--enough to fill two CDs, known as the $100 Guitar Project. Here's the way it worked: Everyone who signed up had one week to write a piece, record it, and send the guitar on to the next player.

What do we have here? It's a lot. Nick, who curated and oversaw the collection of these tracks, and who is the project's nominal "producer", has a stylistically broad range of 'guitar friends'. Tracks range from rock 'guitar heros' to leading names in the field of experimental and traditional guitar genres. The instrument itself has also been treated in varying manners- from plain acoustic sound to traditional amplified sound; from numerous 'sound-changing' devices (pedals, boxes etc.), to 'prepared guitar' transformations. In short, these sixty-nine tracks present a fascinating album of what 64 men and women of wildly differing musical backgrounds came up with using exactly the same starting tool.

I would not expect that many listeners will like all 69 tracks on these two discs.

5.0 out of 5 stars The idea is interesting..and the music is incredible January 25, 2013

It's been a long time since I listened to a CD over and over again as I have this one. This project, to find and old 60's era cheap guitar, then send it around to dozens of different musicians to record tracks using the same instrument, is brilliant, but the music is just amazing. There are sounds ranging from fingerstyle acoustic picking, to full out crunching metal, blues with a slide, electronic feedback, sweet ballads..all are here. Well produced, and tons of information in the liner notes booklet, you'll find yourself analyzing the tracks, and revisiting ones that you may have skipped through earlier, just to see hear how they were created. It's a home-run, and a must have for those who play guitar, or just appreciate how a guitar can come alive in the right hands.

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting results from a brilliant idea. November 27, 2013

The music is not bad, but the 100 Guitar Project is inspiring for musicians and non-musicians alike. I dig guitar music so it's cool to hear how each participant applied this one guitar to their music. Also cool to hear musicians known for other instruments bring their unique ear.

4.0 out of 5 stars B-Day Present May 13, 2013

It is a great present for a guitar player. The write-up on the back provides a description of the music. Also, all proceeds go to a charity.
