Editorial Reviews

In this lesson Tom Feldmann takes you step by step through 15 classic Son House tunes that span every phase of Son's recorded career. This 4 hour lesson is undoubtedly the most extensive look into the music of Son House and the techniques he developed. DVD One highlights 8 songs in Spanish tuning. While DVD Two focuses on 7 songs using the Vestapol tuning (Open D), Standard and most suprising to students of Houses's catalog, Cross-Note tuning with Clarksdale Moan. Also included on DVD Two is a bonus interview with Stefan Grossman where he talks extensively about meeting Son House and recording with him. Rare performances of Son House following his rediscovery are used throughout the lesson. The original audio tracks are included where footage is not used. Series: None

This guy Tom Feldmann sort of came out of left field a few years ago with his videos, but he is a great teacher. Very thorough and understandable. The lessons are straight on with no flash. He isn't trying to show off or impress, although his playing is totally impressive. I have picked up a few of his videos and every one is worth every penny i paid. Clear examples, good camera work, high qualitty. I can watch it just for entertainment, but it makes me want to pick up my guitar and get better. Buy it with no concerns.

Easily the best instruction DVD of the guitar music of Son House you are ever likely to find. Actually, this is probably the ONLY such DVD out there you will ever find! Not very easy to find this sort of material! Tom Feldmann does a incredible job here. Not only is he easy to follow, but the material has been ACCURATELY transcribed. This is exactly how Son House played it, or at least as close as humanly possible. And that is what you really want - accuracy. And even the 2005 discovery of the long lost "Clarksdale Moan" is covered here.

Nice bonus extras include excellent CD transfers of the 1930 and 1940-41 material (including "Clarksdale Moan") and some remembrances by Stephan Grossman of his encounters with Son House. There are also two previously unreleased (to my knowledge) recordings of Son House with Grossman. Nice to have all this AND the lessons.

Final note - do yourself a favor and check out Tom Feldmann's music CDs. He is a great artist in his own right and many of his CDs cover his personal versions of Pre-war Blues - really excellent stuff. Check it out.
