Book Description

She felt that she never, ever live like a normal teenager. All she knew was the little life her parents allowed her to have. That is, until she met him.

A girl who has been sheltered from the world...

Emily Meyers is the daughter of two overprotective, devout Catholics. Newly 15 and still naive to the world, Emily is dying for a taste of "reality”: freedom, deviance, and a boyfriend. For her 15th birthday, her parents begrudgingly agree to take her to the Jersey Shore for a day of fresh air and celebration. Little does she know, her whole world is about to change when she stumbles upon a mysterious man standing by the shoreline.

A man who has never been loved or in love...

Stanley Gulick is a seemingly harmless, isolated loner who has never truly had luck on his side. A high school drop out and a rather emotional male, his family barely knows he exists. One day, he decides to go to the Ocean Grove beach to throw stones into the ocean and pass the time. His one wish is to find a girlfriend, somebody to spend time with—little does he know that he is about to meet the love of his life on her 15th birthday.

Love, Lies, and Infidelity

Not long after they get together, Emily starts high school and quickly adapts to the realities of young adulthood. After falling for Hugh, a prominent jock in one of her classes, Emily struggles with her romance with Stanley. After events spiral out of control, Emily has no other choice but to break Stanley's heart, leaving him shattered in pieces.

Finishing what he started...

Stanley is forced to move on, eventually falling in love with an underage stripper. He works hard to build his life back up after his first heartbreak but it all crumbles to dust one night when he finds himself faced with a painful reminder of his tragic past. In this love inspired suspense novel, first-time author Ari Sims takes her readers on an emotional journey, packed with romance and sex, love and betrayal, and vengeance. From true love to dark erotica, Stanley Gulick ultimately gets his one wish—to go down in history.

4.0 out of 5 stars heavy disturbing dark read December 9, 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
The Gulick House, was recommended to me by a coworker. She picked this up at the library after reading the back summary. The story takes place in our backyard so intrigued us from the start. Also, the dark disturbing side of it caught our attention. Ari Sims did not disappoint. This book is not for the light hearted! You feel very connected to all the characters and the angst the main character lives through. This book is about loneliness, depression, and OBSESSION! It is also pretty dark and sick as well. That being said, I did recommend it and pass it on to my fellow readers. The only thing that did turn me and my friends off, from this author is her bio. She really trashes and bad mouths where she comes from. I do not feel you should blame a whole town, or school, or community on some personal apparent bad experiences Ari Sims has obviously experienced. We personally picked up this book to support someone close to home. I hope this young woman finds her peace of mind and opens her heart up to the world someday.

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerfull April 28, 2010
By ed
Format:Paperback
I don't often write reviews, but there are exceptions.
This is one of them.
When a story is said to be 'powerful', it's because the author inspires
strong emotionsn from the reader.
Happyness,sadness,joy,horror,fear ,anger.
Stephen King does this.
And now, so too does Ari Sims.
Like King, Sims takes you from everyday settings and events
to pure horror. For a first novel, this is amazing!
All of you 'constant readers', Read This!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good read but could be better August 5, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The story of Emily, a 15 year old girl who has extremely overprotective parents and Stanley, an 18 year old boy who never quite did anything right started out as a sweet innocent love story. On her 15th birthday Emily's parents take her to the beach and she meets Stanley. They both needed someone in their life that cared for them That is what they found in each other until Emily started high school and met a new boy. Breaking up with Stanley was hard and it took too long, but Emily finally did it. Both suffer for it--depression, feelings of isolation, of not having a meaning in life.
Emily goes on her way and the story shifts to Stanley and his life. He decides to get a job, move away from home and eventually meets another girl. This one is 17 and a stripper. Another girl Stanley wants to save. They go on living until the day Stanley sees his neighbor--a 16 year old who makes him remember his life with Emily ... and it changes him for the worse.
I am not a spoiler so 'll just say this book is dark and very disturbing. The premise is a good one and one that anyone can understand. Most teenagers feel like the main characters do--lost sometimes, looking for love and acceptance. However, the turns the story takes are scary and I hope are only a figment of the author's imagination. There is some violence, some sex and some unusual behavior that kept my interest, but with a little more editing and more in-depth study of both the minds of Emily and Stanley this book could be a great one.
I see real promise in this author. The story she spun grabs you, some may not like it, some may not understand it, but still it will grab you and make you think. I'd just have an editor help build, the suspense factor even more.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Gulick House April 4, 2010
Format:Paperback
A very intense book from this new author from NJ. Once I began reading this book I did not stop until it was through. You experience a wide range of emotions from the author and characters in the book which keep you reading to find out what happens next. There are plot twists and mature themes in this book. The characters in this book could be anyone you have met in your life and being that this took place in small town america, you never know if you could have already met Stanley!!!! If you are a fan of new authors who give you cutting edge books to read you cannot miss with Ari Sims. After you read The Gulick House you too will be finding yourself waiting for the authors next work to read.

Format:Paperback
I picked up this book the night before the first day of classes. And boy was that a bad idea, because I couldn't put it down! Ari Sims' characters are none that I've seen before. The writing is great and the plot is captivating. The twist will leave you speechless. I finished this book in less than a day and I cannot wait for this author's future books. The Gulick House is a must!

4.0 out of 5 stars Lawd...what did I just read? Beware! August 9, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
Before getting this book, I read review after review. But none of them prepared me for what this book really was about. Before you get this one, please ask yourself "am I ready to get on an emotional rollercoaster?" If not do NOT get this book. It should come with a warning and a rating of R. I don't tell what's in a book but I will say it could have been written by Stephen King. So please beware.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't miss this book!!!! March 10, 2010
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This new author's book The Gulick House arrived in the mail while I was struggling to get through a "best seller". I took a break from my best seller and picked up The Gulick House. I couldn't put it down until it was over! Surprisingly good especially for a new unknown author, with a satisfying twist at the end. I hope Ari Sims has more stories to tell.
