Editorial Reviews

Review

"...the authors are without doubt two of the best-informed and serious gun scholars publishing today ... they have written a very balanced and well-documented essay that objectively summarizes the state of the gun argument on both sides of the debate." -Mike the Gun Guy

"The Gun Debate is written in an admirably neutral tone. Summarizing results from hundreds of studies, the book makes a hugely positive contribution toward sensitive and sensible evidence-based evaluation of what has worked, and what hasn't, in gun control - and why. The language is straightforward English, not econ-speak or reams of tables and statistics. There is something for everyone to take away from this book." --Stone Garden Economics

My first impression after reading the first few chapters was generally favorable. It appeared that the author was making a concerted effort to offer a balanced account of the gun debate. But with each passing chapter, Mr. Cook's anti-gun bias began to show more and more. It became evident that behind his seeming objectivity, lay a much more deeply anti-gun bias than he admits. A low point came when he alleged that gun rights advocates were threatening the group "Mothers Against Guns" with sexual assault. Such an outrageous accusation is evidence that the author's research is weak. It is also clear that he is offering this work as a counter balance to the successful "More Guns, Less Crime." But he falls far short of that standard by any measure. In fairness, I am an NRA member and a strong advocate of gun rights. So I have biases of my own. But, unlike Mr. Cook, I admit them. In the final analysis, this book adds nothing new to the debate. If you like what he says, you'll like the book. If you don't, you wont.

Fair and balanced tratment of a serious problem. As for "anti-gun bias" (a charge that appears in some of the unfavorable reviews), the authors aren't anti-hunter, but they do offer strong arguments to support common sense gun control -- what is fast becoming a historical artifact.

This was an excellent book. It was very even-handed and informative. It treats both the "pro-gun" and "anti-gun" positions fairly and with great insight. The authors also do an excellent job of explaining the weaknesses of the statistics used by both sides in public discourse. The question and answer format makes it very easy to read and addresses the relevant questions to the debate.
