Editorial Reviews

From the Author

Dear Amazon reader,

I have cooking in my genes from my French and Italian ancestors. I am passionate about food and cooking and have been since I can remember. I have surrounded myself with food, sauces, wines & cheese, condiments, oils, vinegars, spices  and hot sauces with my stores for over 25 years.  I was born in the United States and was fortunate to grew up on a small family farm. I also spent several years a s a child growing up in the Caribbean. I traveled a lot with my family. Traveling and my ethnic origins have influenced my cooking style and made me an Epicurus individual. I love creating  and cooking with spices, and unusual ingredients.  I love fried foods, veggies and salads, good soups and comfort foods. Some days I crave very spicy food and other days plain fare. I suppose my cooking style is global cuisine or more world fusion. I can honestly tell you I am never bored in my kitchen!

Some of my favorite recipes are: paper thin fried chicken, Greek dressing, jerk pork, sugar monster rub, red sauce, corn chowder, caesar dressing, turkey meat loaf and white gravy, homemade salsa, calamari with lemon aioli, clams, anything with chipotle peppers or garlic, spicy hot fudge sauce, garlic bread crumbs for fish. OMG, I love them all!

My mission is to get you to cook, whether you are a beginner cook or years in the making. My cookbook and  philosophy will inspire you to use ingredients in ways you may not have thought of, or inspire you try new an unusual ingredients you may not have considered, fry without fear, eat healthy and hopefully have fun doing it.

Happy cooking and eating!

4.0 out of 5 stars Creative Cooking February 22, 2011
Format:Paperback
We've all been there...a package of chicken breasts in the freezer, some veggies in the crisper, but have little inspiration for turning them into a good-tasting meal. Or so we think. The Gypsy Kitchen offers lots of creative ways to dress up food to make an otherwise ordinary meal something special.

The author, who owns a gourmet wine and cheese shop and develops some of her own condiments, includes recipes for some of those plus recipes for salads, soups, appetizers, desserts, and main dishes. I've only tried the Southwestern Chicken so far but was pleased with the result. It was an easy to make recipe for a rub using spices I already had.

I like that the ingredients are simple and can be found at any grocery store, and some of the recipes take a convenience food like cream of mushroom soup and dress it up with added broth, vegetables, and spices. After reading this cookbook, I'm inspired to see how I can dress up basic food with spices, oils, and condiments.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gypsy Juice February 24, 2011
Format:Paperback
I'm a regular at Gypsy Kitchen in Quincy, MA it is by far the best wine and cheese shop in New England. Now that Lisa has provided a cook book with her amazing recipes I can now make these amazing dishes at my own home! One of my favorite products is Gypsy Juice. You haven't tried a real hot sauce until you try Lisa'a Gypsy Juice. It has become a staple at my house and I find myself using it with anything from crackers to making dipping sauces. It compliments almost any food item. I highly recommend buying this cook book. You will not be disappointed!!! It is the best!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved the Cuban Chicken Recipe June 19, 2014
By JSand36
Format:Paperback
I don't even know how I came across this book. But I am so very excited that I did. We tried a number of recipes and were quite pleased. However the Cuban chicken on page 114 is MAGNIFICENT! If you want a new flavorful way to cook chicken, this is it. My family LOVED it and with a side of yellow rice and black beans, this meal has definitely earned a spot in our meal rotation. Can't wait to try some of the other ethnic dishes.

3.0 out of 5 stars I'm a little disheartened April 9, 2014
Format:Paperback
When I read the title which included "Gypsy", I naturally assumed it was representative of the Romany people. I suppose I should have looked at the description more, that was clearly my own mistake, thought still disappointing. I won't dock stars for my own mistakes, though. I'm just a little disappointed with the recipes. I've always cooked with the 'what's in the fridge today' mindset instead of hunting down ingredients to fit a recipe, and I think this book is a little lacking in ingenuity here. That, and I feel that you aren't really at the end of your rope when you have some of the fancier and more exotic ingredients in here. It makes sense for me, my kitchen is always stocked with sri racha and Thai staples, as I rarely eat 'white' ethnic food, (more expensive to make gluten free), but this seems improbable for the average joe's kitchen. So rather than a book that uses odds and ends in your cupboard, it's a book that feeds you economically with some interesting food substitutions. Fun, but not completely unique. [disclaimer: this is not a gluten free cook book, I've just been eating that way long enough that I can use normal recipes with quick tweaking I don't even have to think about anymore. Like subbing flour-gf flour, etc]
