5.0 out of 5 stars technical & progressive metal from Indonesia, February 6, 2009

This is an Indonesian band doing technical and, to some extent progressive, metal.
I would say 80% technical and 20% progressive.

I usually don't like prog music but this one really caught my attention.
Most prog metal I've heard have this cheesy and annoying guitar-thing going on, and singing styles that should have been left in the 80's.

But Kekal are very different, the music never gets "too weird" but keeps it technical and well-balanced between metal-as-most-people-know-it with progressive jazzy bits here and there.

Ok, the singing could have been better: it should have been more at the front and more noticeable, and not stand behind the music as it often does.
The music never gets 100% aggressive, like Sadist would, and is more at mid-tempo but with bursts of aggressive power.
This band is very good at coordinating the energetic and aggressive burst with slower mid-tempo parts, as well as building up the momentum in a song.

The tone of the album is abit dark, introspective, and slightly jazzy.
If I had to dissect and rate the components of this album it would be:
singing 3/5, lyrics 5/5, musicianship 5/5.

Imagine a cross between Dream Theater (minus the guitar soloing) and Atheist and you somewhat approach the sound of Kekal.

I read somewhere that the band is a professed Christian band, but honestly I would not have known, nor do I really care either - great music is great music, and the lyrics are very intelligent...I like lyrics that make me think.
