The Handbook of Psychodrama was not much of a help to me. "Handbooks" on a certain topic usually contain all kinds of information regarding the topic, from the obvious to the details. This one, authored by over a dozen practitioners, reads the same as a textbook, big on the theoretical but less on practicality. Often, an academician's titles and degrees convince him that he is a writer, that is, he assumes himself to be a seamless conveyor of his knowledge via the written word. Too often, that is the case here. Like so many intellectual texts, the authors care less for the reader than for exercising their own intellectual muscles. Hence, I never got to the nuts and bolts of the topic. I got a lot of ethereal platitudes, wordy concepts, and vague information. At least I, a masters level practitioner but without training in psychodrama, had trouble connecting with it.
The high brow writing births an irresistible desire to scan and turn pages quickly, hoping for that promised piece of information that will move you toward the practice of psychodrama. In this sense, the book is useful for increasing your scanning technique. I did take some notes, however, because in nearly 300 pages a reader will assimilate bits and pieces and then recognize a sentence or two that coalesces them. Other than that, it is written almost in a style that is designed to guard the authors' knowledge and keep you in the dark. I found it not reader friendly.
Such basic topics as stage fright, group member blockages, ideas for "scripts", action ideas for specific wounds, and what an act or performance actually looks like is not really given. Due to the number of different contributors, much theoretical stuff is duplicated and basic knowledge overlooked.
