Editorial Reviews

Review

"Ever wrestled with nails, screws, and hex wrenches on 'ready to assemble' shelves, chairs, or tables, all the while thinking that you could just as easily make the design cheaper and better from scratch? If so, White cheers you on…You can use this book to build 34 simple designs, such as tables (including a Lego coffee table), chairs, beds, and benches. Author and blogger White (ana-white.com), who first built furniture during her newborn's naptime, still remembers her fear of firing a nail gun. Those of us who still feel that fear should be glad she's there as a guide." --Publisher's Weekly

"[Ana-White.com] led to White's first book, The Handbuilt Home, which features simple furniture plans to help readers take a crack at construction. The key to getting started? Don't be intimidated. 'We're more capable than we think,' White says." --O, The Oprah Magazine

I have followed Ana almost since she started blogging, and have built several pieces of furniture already. In this book, you aren't going to find complicated building methods like you see in the woodworking magazines - you can literally be a person who has never swung a hammer, and after following Ana's simple directions, you will be building in no time. Also, you don't need any expensive tools to build most of what she has in the book. The photos and design is gorgeous, and it's nothing but plans. I'm excited to get back to building!

Bought anna's book because I have done a lot of projects off her blog and wanted to support her. Wood working is a fairly precise activity, if you are off by even a little you can have a very misshapen final project. With that said she has numerous errors, the worst being the adirondack chair (stringer should be 26 3/8 inch not 24 1/4 inch). At least 3 builds have the wrong shopping lists. I even contacted her awhile ago and still no response clarifying the measurements. She should at least put the corrections on her blog. The idea of this book is to make building things easy and cheap. This doesn't happen if you have to go back to the hardware store 3 times and buy extra wood because you made the wrong cuts or bought a 6 foot board instead of an 8 foot board. Returning the book and will just stick with her blog. Would also agree with other reviewers that there is very little new content in book vs her blog. Save your money and just go to her website.

I do a lot of woodworking and furniture making. My wife suggested I get this book for the plans related to kids furniture. The book is well written and easy to follow. However, when I followed the shopping list and began to build the play table I realized one 8 foot long 1x3 was not enough for this project. With the children's chair, only one 8 foot 2x2 was required, not the 2 specified in the shopping list. Also, the shopping list specifies 2 1/2 inch pocket screws. No where in the instructions does it say where to use them. If the book is intended for non-woodworkers as stated, errors of this type can confuse the beginner.

This book would have 5 stars had they decided to build these projects per the directions. So far I am two projects in on this book and have found errors in both projects. Her shopping list tells you to buy enough wood for one side, not two. This error is found in her farm house table plans and the farm house bench. This book has potential but she doesn't even bother to rectify these with a newer edition or in her blog that she is so well known for. If you buy this book make sure you read the shopping list and cut list. If something seems out of place that's because it is.

I was given this book as a gift because I am pretty handy and an avid diy"er". Ana's book was amazing I have already made a table, and
I can not wait to try bookcase for my kids room. She make it so easy that even though I can find my way around the toolbox, this book
gives you great ideas. You basically pick a project, and take your book with you to the lumber yard for all the pre-cut sizing. No
math needed its great. Donna K. The Handbuilt Home: 34 Simple Stylish and Budget-Friendly Woodworking Projects for Every Room

I read this book last night from cover to cover. Have you ever looked at a table or a bookshelf and thought to yourself... "2000$ that's crazy I could make that for a fraction of the cost!" but then you have no idea where to start you keep dreaming and settle for cheap particle wood furniture?? Well Ana really breaks down furniture making and explains it in such a clear manner that you really can!! I've followed her blog for a while now and have made several of the plans in this book... It's the best self help book on the market! Because if a full time working, single mother of a small child (with no experience) can build coffee tables and play kitchens than I promise you, anyone can!! The joy of seeing your child sleep in the bed you made them and play with the toys you've made is priceless! The Handbuilt Home is a wonderful book for anyone interested in learning about woodworking and would also make a great gift for any DIY person on your Christmas list!

Ana has hit a home run in her new book THE HANDBUILT HOME. Like most other reviewers, I have followed her blog and have built several projects from her free, easy-to-build plans. This book is well-written with many tips, and logically organizes basic information needed by a new woodworker. The plans are organized like a tour of a home: she begins with the entryway and walks the reader through all the rooms, with three to four plans per area. Starting with a color photo of the finished product, each plan includes a materials list and a cut list, and thorough step-by-step diagrams. Ana's plans are labeled for different levels of building ability, but even the more complicated plans are doable by the beginning woodworker. I highly recommend this beautiful and inspirational book by Ana White.
