Book Description

John Tournour, known to his many listeners and fans as JT the Brick, is one of the biggest sports radio personalities in America. Making it as a sports radio host is almost impossible, and JT went about it in a fearless way, leaving a lucrative position as a Merrill Lynch stockbroker to pursue his dream. But Tournour's hardest challenge would come when his best friend and mentor, Andrew Ashwood was diagnosed with cancer.

THE HANDOFF is about JT the Brick's rise to sports radio stardom, and how his entire view of life changed as his best friend fought a losing battle to a deadly disease. As Andrew heroically endured chemotherapy treatment after treatment, Tournour was at his side, marveling at his friend's bravery and trying to be there for him as best he could. THE HANDOFF is about facing your fears, the power of connection, and the incredible lessons Tournour learned from his dear friend.

Editorial Reviews

"For many people, "JT the Brick" is to sports what Edward R. Murrow was to World War II; legions of fans tune in to his radio shows for discussions of all the latest news. [A] frank portrait of grief and loss, the lessons, previewed in chapter titles, transcend pep-talk cliché and carry genuine weight. Ashwood's and Tournour's stories combine here in a way that lifts the book above others in its genre. A memorable meditation likely to resonate deeply with sports fans everywhere."—Kirkus Review

"Reminds me of Tuesdays with Morrie with a 'bro-code.' It's fast-paced, poignant--at times FUNNY--story that leaves a lifetime impression."—Curt Menefee, host of Fox NFL Sunday

"An earnest remembrance of a friend and the wisdom he passed on to a sports talk radio anchor."—Shelf Awareness

5.0 out of 5 stars Emotional Wallop August 14, 2013
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This book was surprisingly moving and very powerful. Being a big fan of JT on sports talk radio I was interested in his story-and to discover that he began as a cold calling stock broker (insane descriptions of that lifestyle) and morphed into one of sports talk radio's big stars is truly compelling. From his victory in the original Jim Rome SmackOff back in the day, to his discovery by one Andrew Ashwood-a legendary radio programmer, JT's story is a rocket ride. From fantastic and highly nuanced insider stories of Pete Rose and Al Davis to the blood thirsty crowds at a Vegas Tyson/Holyfield bout, the book packs an emotional wallop. Ashwoods generosity both personally and professionally catapult JT's career, culminating in them both becoming national players at Fox Sports Radio. Then, just as mentor Ashwood reaches the zenith of his career he is stricken with cancer and the whole raucous energy of the story downshifts into the ultimate "perspective reality check" with "The Handoff." Captivating. Raw. Tender. An emotional roller coaster. The strength and courage these friends put forth together is inspiring. The heartbreak of the "partnership" where JT and Andrew walk together through Ashwood's treatments deliver a satisfying, incredibly touching story. This book is not just the victory lap of a radio star-it is a celebration of a remarkable friendship. 5 enthusiastic stars!!

There's so much to say about this book. It's about sports, radio, career, family, but mostly it's about friendship. You can clearly see how much Andrew Ashwood meant to JT and all of his friends - it's all there in the pages. The Handoff also gives readers a vivid look at what life can be like for a radio personality. It's not all about traveling to Super Bowls and Daytona 500's (although, as JT clearly illustrates, that can be fun and rewarding) it's about long hours and fighting through to the next show. Those are things that you don't hear other radio hosts talk about. It's refreshing to read such an honest perspective.

The Handoff is a heart-wrenching story about watching your best friend go toe-to-toe with cancer, and being there with him every step of the way. But after putting it down I didn't feel as much sad as I did hopeful. Because Andrew left JT, and all of his friends, with all of these meaningful lessons and stories. Enough to fill a book!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Hand Off August 14, 2013

It was refreshing to read a book that has a genuine message. Having been part of many of the moments offered in the book, it is a great reminder of how fortunate many of us are to have such good friends/brothers, not everyone can say that. The pace of the book is good and in many cases made you feel like you were there while reading it. My suggestion would be is to share the book with as many people as possible as it may cause them to reflect on their own life and what it means to be there for someone.

In this book, cancer wasn't cured. Yet it was cancer that cured the ills of a friendship that had been frayed.

The Handoff is a book by a radio guy, but it's not a radio book.

This memoir has some outstanding life lessons about determination, friendship, loyalty, fighting, forgiving and forgetting.

It's "Tuesday's With Morrie" for a new generation.

Great read! The bond between JT and Andrew is something many people in this world only dream of achieving. The Handoff reminds us all that life is fleeting and to be thankful for every second of every day. Andrew taught JT to attack all moments with gusto! Read this book and pass on the Gusto!

If you have ever had a Big Dream that seemed almost impossible but somehow meant to be then this is the book for you. It will inpsire you to take the leap of faith and follow your heart!
If you ever had a Mentor in Life or hope to Mentor others The Handoff will show you the depth of Feeling, Respect and Love that define those types of relationships. Most importantly if you or someone you know has been faced with the harsh reality of Cancer then this a must read. Andrew's Ashwood's Courage, Humor and Positive Attitude will bring tears to your eyes.
His "Pay it Forward" and "Winning is the Only Option" Creedo make this a Inspiration Memoir that I am sure I will return to many times in my life. I believe this is a book that will be given from Fathers to Sons and Sons to Fathers and Friend to Friend for many years to come!
