Editorial Reviews

The anti-folk hero returns with a brand new album that finds an inspired partnership with Kimya Dawson (as heard on the track "Together"). The friendship, forged when Hamell supported Kimya and Aesop Rock s Uncluded tour, adds a new dimension to Hamell s biting humor and political comedy that has won him legions of fans.

I'm the type of guy that when I first hear a new release, I have to listen to it 3 or 4 times to really internalize the music and let it grow on me. Not this time. I was initially a bit jjarred hearing Ed perform with a backing band, after years of listening to him accompanied by his own solo guitar, but the strength of the songs was so great that I played the entire disc 4 times in a row without stopping, not to make myself familiar with the material, but just because I loved what I was hearing so much. Ed's lyrics illustrate that he's never lost that angry yet bemused way of looking at absurdity and injustice, and once I warmed to the new band format I found myself liking this even better than the "Ed & his guitar vs. the world" presentation I am used to. Highly recommended. Highly, highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not My Favorite But Still Pretty Damn Good May 25, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I like this CD, and If you're a Hamell fan, you'll like this CD, too. His lyrics are great as always, and there are some classic tunes on here. But if you're not as familiar with Hamell, I'd recommend Tough Love, Songs for Parents Who Enjoy Drugs, and Choochtown and over this one - I think there are more great songs on those CDs.

4.0 out of 5 stars He's back and in fine form... March 29, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
My favorite stuff from Ed revolves around the characters in his life he's chosen to magnify - his storytelling songs. My favorite disk from him would have to be Choochtown, but this is a close second. From the moment you put it on, you're transported into his world, and what an interesting place Hamellville is.. Full of fun loving people who've led interesting lives. The title track "Happiest man in the World" is a lyrical jem from a man who is indeed the real deal..

Yet another fantastic album - his work seems to go from strength to strength and this is right up there with Choochtown when it comes to telling funny yet believable stories.
