More About the Author

I've always loved business. When I was a young girl, I made up a game called "Important Papers" - other girls would play house, I would play office. I would collect old receipts, bills and cancelled checks and play at being a business person. As a teenager, instead of working at summer camp like my siblings, I went downtown to work as an administrative person in offices.
So it wasn't too surprising that I became interested in personal finance and investing as an adult. I turned that passion into a career as a Certified Financial Planner and eventually founded my own business, Curtis Financial Planning. My clients are primarily women and their families who need help with financial planning and investing.

My ebook, The Happiness Spreadsheet, was written with my clients in mind. Many struggle to keep their spending under control and I wanted to help them without making it an onerous and unpleasant task. The Happiness Spreadsheet is a guide to budgeting- but it is about more than dollars and cents. It guides the reader to figuring out what they most value and then budgeting with their values in mind.

Socrates warned us that the unexamined life is not worth living. This might have been a big consideration back in Athens in his days, but in the "here and now" of our turbulent economic times for many of us the "unaccounted" life might not only make us poor, but also leave us unhappy. Money can't buy happiness, but it can be a tool for better self-knowledge, which is likely to bring us happiness, to put the Socratic spin on it.

In The Happiness Spreadsheet, financial planner Cathy Curtis reassures us that we can have it all, as long as we know clearly what having it all means to us. It's not about having everything, but having the right things that match our values. The series of spreadsheets in the book gradually bring us to a mindful realization that the value of money is not always in the numbers but in the level of support and growth it provides for a life lived based on what we value.

I have had the fortune to participate in a discussion of priorities and happiness based on The Happiness Spreadsheet, and I can say that I continue to fill in the fields defined by my values in my mind as I go about making my financial decisions, big and small.

Full disclosure: I am a friend of Cathy Curtis. And she mentions me in this book. And we are teaching a class on it together. But you know what? I'm teaching the class with Cathy because I so believe in this book.

I love it when people examine what matters to them, and make choices to spend -- their time, and here, their money -- in accord with those things. The Happiness Spreadsheet facilitates this very process in a clean, clear, funny, gentle way. This is so important when it comes to finances -- the place where power and energy meet . . . and also where there is often a lot of shame and regret. The way Cathy addresses this entire topic is like a friend over a glass of wine or cup of coffee: with kindness, trust, intuition, and a great way of explaining just what will help you and how you do it.

Bless her for doing it. Bless everyone who buys the book and takes this journey to more clarity, empowerment . . . and . . . happiness.
