Editorial Reviews

Review

The Happy Couple is a guidebook to relationships that every couple should read. My wife of fifty-nine years calls marriage a struggle, and Joseph Campbell called it an ordeal. They are defining the effort that two individuals must make to create a relationship. Let the wisdom of this book help the two of you create a third entity: a true and happy relationship.”
Bernie Siegel, MD, author of A Book of Miracles and The Art of Healing

The Happy Couple makes a great pocket book. There will be times when you get into a bad spot with your partner and you want to do something right now to stop the stress. You only need to remember one thing: ‘Where is my copy of The Happy Couple?’ Just look up the appropriate tip and you're on your way to creating a better relationship. Plus, you can avoid another night on the couch and cold shoulders.”
Ellyn Bader, PhD, founder of The Couples Institute

“When couples say they want to ‘work on their relationship,’ what does that really mean, and what work is required? Goldsmith’s The Happy Couple lays it all out through clear objectives and direct behaviors. It also amply demonstrates how changed behaviors lead to changed feeling states. I can only believe that any couple who follows this set of promptings will evolve into a much better relationship.”
James Hollis, PhD, Jungian analyst and author of many books, including Hauntings: Dispelling the Ghosts Who Run Our Lives

We all know the highs that come with falling in love - but what's never as clear is how to balance in-between the high and low once your relationship is well established, and especially when that well established relationship hits a (baby) bump in the road. What happens too many times is the focus goes outside of the relationship and it suffers. It may not be terrible or unendurable, but it can get stagnate. This book made me so happy - as it allowed me to take a step back and look at my 5 year marriage (10 year relationship) from a new perspective. Not of a, "Well I guess a kid changes things and that's that", but a "Wow, we've been focusing a lot of energy on the kid and ourselves and not on each other." I've read a ton of books on love and relationships and so many times they just explain the patterns and things that can happen, but not what you can actually do to change it yourself. They make you feel like it's this insurmountable task to fix issues that have come up in your relationship. This book gives you actual EXERCISES to help you communicate more clearly, listen better & be more grateful and it's in all those little shifts and changes that you see the most results. I highly recommend it.

At some point in our lives, most all of us need to deal with unsuitable habits in our relationships. They occur when we aren’t paying attention to what we are doing or saying, and so we slip into a comfort zone of not being our best selves. Unfortunately, even if you don’t see it, your partner is going to feel it and perhaps be hurt by your words or actions.

The Happy Couple: Relationship Habits for Healthy, Lasting Love by Barton Goldsmith is an extremely helpful book which every couple must read. It offers an exciting range of choices to work out together, which are there in our everyday life, but which we often overlooked.

A case in point is about relationship. A relationship cannot thrive or even survive without good communication, writes Goldsmith. He adds, “Good communication is not about never arguing. It’s not about being able to read each other’s minds or about being able to have long discussions on a variety of topics. It is about being able to share all the emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual aspects of your life, and without being judged or feeling devalued.”

It is not only about communication. The book also deals with Gratitude, Humor, Acknowledgment, Interdependence, Celebration, Playfulness, Meeting Needs, Acceptance, Positivity, Honesty, Nurturing, Balance, Togetherness, Problem Solving, Affection, Compassion, Thoughtfulness, Respectful Arguing, Security, Enjoyment, Emotional Progress, Working on Your Relationship, and In Love for Life. It covers almost all aspects of relationship.

Reading the book will help you to identify your bad habits. Confronting them can be difficult, but it will be worth it.

My husband and I (married almost 27 years) are repeatedly asked by others how we are so happy. Well, we just stumbled across this book recently, and it turns out, we do most of the things in this book. We bought the book to give to our daughter and finance. Our daughter is already aware of all the things her parents do, but the fiance comes from a less positive environment, and had been given only scary, negative books by his parents. He really appreciated the dose of optimism.
The Happy Couple takes a positive, pro-active approach to nurturing a good relationship. I've always felt the secret to a couple's happiness is learning to find your joy by bringing your spouse joy. This books gives lots of ideas on how to do that.
The book is an easy read, short, and pleasant.

We enjoyed reading this together so much that we bought copies for the kids. It's nice to have as a reference when things come up as they do for every couple. We also purchased another of his books. We were not disappointed. Great tips. This book could've used some additional editing. But the message was clear. I'd recommend everyone have a copy on their night stand.

Married 26 years dealing presently with a husband consumed with work and obtaining a PHD. The book I found very helpful. Exercises in the book are meant to be done together however ill have to go back and work on getting husband to participate with so little time. What I liked about the author is the honestly that when our partner isn't as available he gives good suggestions how to work thru those difficult times encouraging reader to work around the changes.
