Book Description

September 12, 2011
A southern Renaissance man, Eugene Walter (1921-98) was a pioneering food writer, a champion of southern foodways and culture, and a legendary personality among food lovers. The Happy Table of Eugene Walter, which introduces a new generation of readers to Walter's culinary legacy, is a revelation to anyone interested in today's booming scene in vintage and artisanal drinks--from bourbon and juleps to champagne and punch--and a southern twist on America's culinary heritage.

Assembled and edited by Walter's literary executor, Donald Goodman, and food writer Thomas Head, this charming cookbook includes more than 300 recipes featuring the use of spirits in the food and drink of the South, as well as numerous asides, lovely short essays, and countless witticisms that make for great reading as well as good cooking. A wellspring of southern eating and drinking traditions lovingly collected by Walter over the years, the volume is also a celebration of Walter himself and his incomparable appetite and talent for life and its surprising pleasures. The Happy Table showcases Walter's remarkably contemporary gustatory sensibilities and the humorous and quirky yet incisive voice for which he has long been embraced.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Wonderful new book....devoted to Walter's writing about Southern tradition, to which he was passionately attached....offers recipes (some dating to the 19th century) for vegetables, meat, fish, rice, sauces, soufflés, sandwiches and desserts, among other dishes."
-Tuscaloosa News

"Utterly charming . . . . You'll want to cook from it-but it makes especially delightful reading."
-Metro Magazine

A top "10 Must-Read Fall Books for Food Lovers."
-Zagat.com

"Any cooking lover should know the work of Eugene Walter, a great Southern food writer and notable character in the foodie community."
-Zagat.com

"So much more than a collection of classic recipes. . . . This appealing concoction is equal parts Southern culinary and cultural history, well-seasoned with wit and charm. . . . Any serious student of Southern culture should gleefully devour this book and raise a cocktail in honor of Eugene Walter."
-Austin Chronicle

"A remarkably well-thought out book where the author has shown an in-depth and reaching knowledge of ingredients and culture....It will change the way you cook."
-Monica Bhide

"[A] distinguished university press title. . . . [featuring] recipes that are based on the classics but elevated by Walter's modern food sense and cooking acumen."
-ForeWord

"A book that's big and loud and fun, much like the author himself."
-Flavors

"An interesting read in addition to providing wonderful recipes."
-Southernfood.org

"If this book had only recipes, it would be terrifically useful. The bigger treat, however, is to hear Walter's voice again-comic, encouraging, utterly singular."
-First Draft Reviews, The Alabama Writers' Forum

"The very readable Happy Table never gets bogged down."
-Seattle Weekly

"This cookbook contains over 300 Southern-themed recipes for foods and libations that not only inspire but offer a history lesson. . . . this collection shines. . . . It uniquely captures the history and culture of the South and is highly recommended."

"This book sparkles with the author's wit."
-Atlanta Journal-Constitution

"Not just a cookbook but also a guide to life and a vision of convivial happiness."
-AL.com

"Eugene Walter was not too timid to live life to the fullest, and we are indebted to him for sharing his flamboyant insights into this wonderland of food and drink. The Happy Table captures a history of southern culture that might otherwise be lost and most certainly needs to be preserved. I envision readers using these recipes and throwing Eugene Walter parties as a salute to this great, eccentric Southern man--and I hope to be invited."--Frank Stitt, James Beard award-winning chef and owner of Highlands Bar and Grill, Bottega, and Chez Fonfon, Birmingham, AL

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun, food and drink from Alabama to Europe October 13, 2011
Format:Hardcover
Eugene Walter's incomparable life and his love for food and drink come alive in this sparkling book. It has recipes that will interest today's cooks with history about food to interest all. Walter's writings and drawings are charming and entertaining. If you're looking for a Christmas gift for a foodie, a fan of the south and southern cooking or someone who wants to know more about a fascinating man from Mobile who helped found the Paris Review and acted in Fellini movies, this is the book for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Prophet in his own home town January 5, 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
First, this is a splendid book. Eugene Walter had a great love of food and the recipes included here show his knowledge and present a way of enjoying life to the fullest They are fun to read even if you never prepare one. Second, it is difficult to review a person whom one has known for years, both the good and bad, the genius and the fool, the clown and the court jester and do it justice. There will never be another like Eugene Walter and for that we can be thankful in more ways than one. His was a most interesting life and it is fitting that he decided to return to Mobile to live out his final years. He was filled with talent and marvelous ideas and also was clever though to live off the generosity of his friends all his life.It is worth the price of the book to read of Eugene's knowledge and love of good food. And his wonderful attitude of "When all else fails, throw a party" is worth including in one's own philosophy. His description of Mobile will never be topped and without him, our city is the poorer. Rest in peace, Eugene, you did us well and we miss you.

I love this book. I bought three and gave two away. It has old and unusual recipes. There are essays and descriptions from Eugene Walter in the book that are wonderful. I made the orange cake on page 194. Very nice, especially a couple of days later. Even if you never cook a single thing from the book, it is worth the read. The Happy Table of Eugene Walter: Southern Spirits in Food and Drink
