More About the Author

Zoë Harcombe's passion is obesity. People want to be slim more than they want virtually anything else in the world and yet two thirds of people in the 'developed' world are overweight and one quarter to one third are obese. This makes no sense.

Zoë was the first pupil from her school to graduate from Cambridge University. Whilst studying maths and economics at this historic institution, Zoë set out to answer the million dollar question - Why do you overeat? When all you want is to be slim? This became the title of Zoë's first book - published in 2004. Stop Counting Calories & Start Losing Weight followed in 2008, with an accompanying recipe book and The Obesity Epidemic: What caused it? How can we stop it? was published in October 2010.

Having worked internationally as an HR Director/VP at blue chip organisations such as Mars, SmithKline Beecham and the Welsh Development Agency, Zoë left corporate life in 2008 to make diet and health her full time role. Since then, Zoë has set up The Harcombe Diet club, to provide on line support for people rejecting processed food in favour of what we should be eating - real food.

Zoë has a Diploma in Diet & Nutrition and a Diploma in Clinical Weight Management, but struggles to find anything that is being taught in 'conventional' nutritional worlds that is true or evidence based. Hence why she spent 2008-10 writing The Obesity Epidemic - 135,000 words blowing apart: the misapplication of thermodynamics to dieting; the notion that 1lb = 3,500 calories, let alone that a deficit of 3,500 calories will lead to a weight loss of 1lb; the Seven Countries Study and the subequent change in our diet advice, which has caused the obesity epidemic; the role of exercise in obesity and much more.

Zoë's personal values are health, relationships, personal development, mutuality and integrity. The order of the first two has not changed in 20 years. Her personal goal is two fold and complementary - to do whatever can be done to reverse the horrific, man-made, obesity epidemic and to make a difference in the lives of others.

Zoë lives in the Welsh countryside with her husband, Andy, a rescue dog and a rescue cat. Andy descibes her as friendly, enthusiastic, principled, chatty, passionate and short! She is a member of Mensa, but friends say she hides it well! Other passions are rugby - especially Wales - cocoa & cocoa butter (i.e. real chocolate), friends and dinner parties. There can be little better in life than great company and great food - more of both and the world would be a happier and healthier place.

I would highly recommend this book/diet. I've never been one to count calories, and I didn't weigh myself before I started; I can tell you that in just a little over 2 weeks, the pants that were 'TIGHT' are now slipping off my hips...my clothes are getting loose, and I'm shrinking daily. My friends & family all noticed literally only 3 days in that I had lost weight. I'm finding the Harcombe diet easy to follow, and I'm eating well, and I feel great! It's broken up into easy to read/follow parts, and full of good information concerning health, how your body reacts with food, and certain combinations of food, and why. I did find however, there were certain foods I wasn't able to look up in the book...foods I wasn't sure if I could eat or not, ie lemons. I love to put lemons in my water, and couldn't find any information about lemons. What can I use as a salad dressing besides just olive oil? I also have no idea where to find bacon that's not smoked or has no sugar in it...does it exist? I had to rely on a friend for this information. She said there are blogs & chat rooms where people exchange ideas, get questions answered, etc. I don't feel like I'm on a diet. This diet is portable; you can take it wherever you go. For example, if you're invited to a dinner party, or out to restaurant, your equipped with the knowledge of what you can eat & still enjoy yourself. It's easy to slip into your lifestyle for a lifetime. Invest in this book, not a new wardrobe of 'larger' clothes. As with anything else in this life...you get to choose.

I simply love this book. The principles are explained well, it's easy to understand, and it works!!! I feel great, and although I only want to lose about 10 pounds, half of it came off the first 5 days (phase 1), where the goal is to remedy any possible Candida, Food Intolerance, and Hypoglycemia, which are, according to the author, the causes of food cravings. And, really, if you're not craving food, it's pretty easy to eat well! And you can eat PLENTY on this diet--I often have to eat way more than I normally would to make sure I don't get hungry and crave processed carbs. And the weight still comes off!

This is one of the healthiest "diets" I've ever heard of, and the easiest. Very simplified, once you get past the initial Phase 1, you basically eat real food (not processed), separating fats (things with faces) and carbs (things without faces), eating most vegetables with either. That way your system digests things better and you aren't craving food because your body is getting the good nutrition it needs without being addicted to foods that are bad for you.

I've even started to cook (my family would be shocked) so I can know what's in the foods I'm eating. For me, that's huge, because I've been living off the steam tables at Whole Foods and New Leaf for ages--but even there, you don't know if things have sugar and other stuff in them that you don't want. And like most people I've been mixing my fats and carbs, which confuses the digestive system.

Anyway, blah blah blah--just get the book and judge for yourself. I you can get through five days of eating lots of food but nothing processed and (hardest for me) no wine or potatoes, you'll either be convinced that it's terrific or you won't have lost anything but possibly some nasty cravings due to Candida, Food Intolerance, or Hypoglycemia. Not a bad bet!

This diet works! I watched Zoe's YouTube videos then bought the book. I told myself I can do anything for 5 days..after Phase 1 the diet adds back in additional foods and it's quite easy to stay on. I recommend this book.

I've been eating the Harcombe way for 3 weeks. My cravings are gone. I'm having three meals a day now and I was a grazer. I was hungry all the time, now I feel full before I finish my plate. For the last 9 months I couldn't get rid of a fungal infection and now it's gone.
I was a heavy smoker(70 - 80 cigarettes a day) and after I quit I packed on 60 pounds in 6 months and been keeping them for 2 years even though I began exercising in earnest. I'm over 40, very active and strong but 220 lbs can't be all muscle even for a tall woman.
After reading LOTS of diet books, trying some methods and disliking the fact that they made me weak, I discovered Ms. Harcombe's book and the instant I finished reading it I decided to give it a try. I said good bye to the first 8 pounds this morning, after exactly 3 weeks. I'm very confident I've found the next best thing after "The Easy Way to Stop Smoking" by Alen Carr. The English are very high in my esteem indeed!
I'd advise no-nonsense people to give this diet a try. I don't have time for planning, keeping journals, counting and everything else but I find it very easy to follow. There's lots in it for fussy people, too. And the best thing: you can enjoy holidays and special events without feeling guilty!

I have had the worst time trying to lose weight! At 35, it's time to get this thing under control! After spending MONTHS going to the gym everyday (and 2x a day for around 2 months), I didn't lose a pound! Personal trainer and EVERYTHING! Clearly, I wasn't eating the right stuff. I've tried Weight Watchers, Spark, the whole 9 yards... And I just couldn't even begin to drop a single pound! So, after looking at tons of books, etc. I landed on this one. And guess what!? It works! At the end of phase 1 I had lost about 8lbs. Right now, I'm into the first week of Phase 2 and I've dropped 10lbs (20 more lbs and I'll be at my goal). My belly pooch is almost gone and my complexion is starting clear and not be so red. This is amazing and (for me) it was easy to follow. But the main key, NO PRESERVATIVES! This means you will probably have to cook. As someone who isn't much of a cook, I was a bit daunted with this. Turns out, it's not as complicated as I thought. Just do it! It's easy, you're not hungry, and you'll feel so much better! (And any diet that allows you to have butter is awesome!) Thanks Zoe for a great guide!! :)
