Editorial Reviews

Hardcover; Fine; Dust Jacket - Like New; 387 pp. index, bibliography, chapter notes, photographs, illustrations, mapped end boards, first edition. A fine unread copy in a fine bright dust jacket. An absorbing read. One of the" Big Four" Arizona cattle books. The author a throughly knowledgeable chronicler, sets the record straight, having been disgusted with the endlessly perpetrated myths, distortions, and just plain errors passed on about the Aztec and its legendary cattle outfit.

Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
Written from a cattlemans perspective with a southwestern flair. The author Robert Carlock implies throughout his book that the Hashknife cowboys were not to blame for the majority of atrocities that happened on the Aztec range in northeastern Arizona, defending the Hashknife all the way. Carlock gives very detailed information on the creation and operation of the Aztec cattle Co.and all the big players with decent historical documentation. Also a great history lesson on the establishment of the town Holbrook, AZ with its trials and tribulations. The author also threw in some historical tid-bits on the Tewkburys and Grahams fued and made a valient effort trying to dispell myths that any of the Hashknife outfit were associated with this war. After reading the book I'm inclined to believe that the founders and cheif operators of the Aztec Land & Cattle Co.were gentlemen and business men of the day, however, certain elements of the Hashknife outfit itself are still in question. A great read, you be the judge.
