Book Description

*New edition: Now includes the Supreme Court decision and its effects on the ACA*

The American health care system is vast, complex and confusing. Books about it shouldn't be. The Health Care Handbook is your one-stop guide to the people, organizations and industries that make up the U.S. health care system, and the major issues the system faces today. The Handbook's five chapters (250 pages) cover:

* Inpatient and outpatient health care and delivery systems
* The different types of health insurance and how they're structured
* Health policy and government health care programs
* Concise summaries of 31 different health professions
* Medical research, technology, and drugs
* A clear summary of the Affordable Care Act, challenges to the law, and other reform options.
* Economic concepts and the factors that make health care so expensive
* The Pharmaceutical and Medical Device industries

Each section introduces the key facts and foundations that make the health care system work in a clear and neutral manner. The book also includes balanced analyses of current challenges and controversies in health care, including medical errors, government regulation, medical malpractice, high drug prices, and much more. Suggested Readings are included at the end of each chapter for readers who wish to learn more about specific topics.

The book is the work of two medical students, Elisabeth Askin and Nathan Moore. When Elisabeth and Nathan worked to educate themselves about the American health care system they couldn't find a source that was comprehensive, understandable and non-biased - so they decided to write it themselves. After thousands of hours of research, writing, and consulting with dozens of national experts, the Health Care Handbook is now available. It's rigorously researched and scrupulously unbiased yet written in a conversational and humorous tone that's a pleasure to read and illuminates the convoluted health care system and its many components. The book is essential reading for health professionals, health professions students, and anyone who interacts with the U.S. health care system.

Featuring a foreword from Dr. William Peck, former chair of the Association of American Medical Colleges and dean of the Washington University School of Medicine.

"The Healthcare Handbook is an extraordinary accomplishment. Elizabeth Askin and Nathan Moore showed what two hard-working, intelligent medical students are capable of achieving. The handbook presents the complex healthcare system in a clear and lucid manner. I believe that the handbook will serve as the foundation for the introduction to and instruction of all medical students as they confront an evolving healthcare system. Bravo for a job well done."

Gerald S. Levey, M.D.
Dean Emeritus, David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA
The Lincy Foundation Distinguished Service Chair
Distinguished Professor of Medicine

"The Health Care Handbook could not have been more timely given the uncertain future of health care in America. Perhaps it is too optimistic to think that the more professionals and others are well-informed about the issues, the more likely we are to make the right decisions for the health of our population. This has been an amazing accomplishment undertaken by two amazing students. It was a great experience for them as it was for me. It will be a great learning experience for all its readers."

William A. Peck, M.D.
Director, Center for Health Policy
Former Dean, School of Medicine
Washington University in St. Louis
Former Chair, Association of American Medical Colleges

Editorial Reviews

Review

"It's the kind of book to share not only with your doctors and colleagues, but with your friends and Aunt Dorothy, too.  In their unpretentious voice, Ms. Askin and Mr. Moore make clear from the beginning that their explanations are neither in-depth nor definitive. But given their evenhanded and highly organized prose, it's hard not to put their book in the same revered category as a medical textbook or dictionary. In a mere 175 pages, and with an impressive roster of references and well-placed graphics, "The Health Care Handbook" illuminates the maddeningly opaque terms, acronyms, organizations, personages and policies that abound in health care. The authors do so not by expounding on the minutiae, but by jettisoning the jargon and gobbledygook and presenting only the core ideas." - Pauline Chen, M.D., The New York Times

"This wonderful book by and for students is exactly what it claims to be - a clear and concise guide to the incredibly complex health system we have in the United States. It is chock full of important knowledge; and it is engagingly written. Although the authors invite readers not to read straight through, it is hard to put it down."
Stephen C. Schoenbaum, MD, MPH, Special Advisor to the President, The Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation

"Medical students Askin and Moore have partnered to write an extremely easy-to-understand book that explains the U.S. health-care system. The book succeeds in making sense of health care without opinion, bias, or dense textbook language. Divided into five chapters, the book contains a wealth of information that will leave health-care professionals, students, and patients well educated about a system that usually leaves everyone confused."

5.0 out of 5 stars Healthcare Explained! June 4, 2012
By Aaron E
Format:Kindle Edition
My father was a doctor and I grew up hearing about how the various regulations, insurance reimbursements, changing economic landscape etc., was hurting his practice. I'm not sure he fully appreciated all the moving parts out there. This book does a fantastic job of connecting the dots for individuals and professionals alike. I consider it a great resource and am just disappointed that I didn't have the chance to discuss it with my dad. I think it provides clarity and value for everyone.

I highly recommend it!

There is so much confusion about health care in the US, even among health care professionals. The authors have written a terrific resource that answers many questions asked by patients and their families. American health care feels complicated because it IS complicated. Kudos to Askin and Moore for their work and for making this an electronic, living document, that can be updated as needed. One caveat is that this is a basic guide, so policy wonks and those who have a lot of experience in the Slough of Health Insurance Plan Despond will probably not find much new information here, but for most readers, this book provides just the right level of content depth and is written in a very accessible style.

5.0 out of 5 stars At Last June 2, 2012

Finally an easy to read book that helps a novice, a pre-med or medical school student, navigate through the maze of health care information out there. Students are taught science and medicine but not how it fits in the real world. This book by Washington University medical students fills that big gap in a very helpful way. Thank you.
