I started cooking for our Beagle puppy at 5 months old using the book, The Whole Pet Diet by Andi Brown. In addition to a few recipes for dogs, she provides wonderful recipes for pet vitamin supplements. Once I was comfortable with the concept of cooking for our puppy, I began my search for an aditional cookbook. This one is great. It is full of easy recipes that can be cooked quickly. It also provides quick health tips and recommended portion sizes for your dog. To each meal, I add the vitamin powder supplement and coat oil supplement from Brown's book. Our puppy is now 9 months old and he sports a vibrant coat and great smelling breath.

I was looking for a book, that would include receipes for treats, meals, and overall dog health. This has everything, and always includes a vet's opinion, which I think is very helpful!

Until I purchased this book, I was only considering making my dogs treats and meals. This book convinced me to go for it. I found almost all of the recipes to be easily explained using a minimal amount of ingredients... therefore making it a reasonable thing to do. I know for sure I will be making all of his treats from now on. Not only will be it be healthier but will also cost less and last just as long! I'm excited to try some of the recipes!!

If you are looking for an easy guide to cooking for your dog, this is a great book!

I WISH IN THE DESCRIPTION THEY WOULD HAVE TOLD US 98% OF THE RECIPES CALLS FOR 1 1/2 CUPS OF WHEAT!
IN THIS DAY AND AGE WE ALL KNOW THAT WHEAT ALONG WITH OTHER GRAINS IS AN "HIGH" ALLERGEN FOR YOUR DOGS!
THERES SO MANY OTHER THINGS THAT CAN BE USED INSTEAD OF WHEAT.
THE ULTIMATE REASON I DECIDED TO HOMECOOK FOR MY PRECIOUS BEAGLE IS BECAUSE OF ALL THE ALLERGENS ....BESIDES ALL THE OTHER GARBAGE IN PET FOOD...........THATS IN THE COMMERCIAL DOG FOODS! I DIDNT NEED A BOOK ON HOW TO HOME COOK THAT WAS GOING TO HAVE THE "BIGGEST" ALLERGEN "WHEAT" IN ALL THE RECIPES!
THE BOOK ALSO TELLS YOU WHAT YOUR DOG SHOULD BE HAVING BUT DOESNT EXPLAIN HOW TO GET WHERE TO GET ITS ALL VERY VAGUE! I DIDNT EVEN WANT TO GIVE IT ONE STAR!

I've been cooking my dog's meal's for about 2 years and this is one of the better book I've found so far. I have not used any of the treat recipes because I prefer to use dehydrated chicken or beef strips as treats. If you get a dehydrator you can save big bucks on these. I own Pitcairn's book and several others, including those advocating for the BARF diets. All I can say is that every single one got much too confusing for me in terms of supplements, how to balance, and how much to feed. This book really does break things down well and has a nice organization to it. I also like that it lays flat on the table. I gave it 4 stars because I agree that it had many wheat-rich recipes and was a bit too reliant on carbs. That said...

It seems like it should be kind of simple, but I'm actually shocked at the feeding guidelines I see for dogs -- from commercial sources and for home-made diets. I started out following them and my dog gained weight. Since then, I cut back on portions and reduced the amount of grains I feed. I generally shoot for 1/2-2/3 meat and the rest veggies mixed with a little bit of rice, quinoa, or sometimes oats. I add a vitamin, mineral and enzyme supplement (either Nupro or Wysong) and some water to make a gravy, and voila! My dog is healthy, happy, her bloodwork is great. When I adopted her she had lyme and on this diet she cleared her titer in 6 months. On top of this, my 16 year old cat was jealous so I bought a supplement for her and now she's on the diet (but with no grains & a feline supplement powder). I've fed my cat only grain-free or low grain canned food and no seafood for most of her long life. Felines are proper carnivores; dogs & humans are omnivores.

My three dogs have "delicate" (insert "barf a lot") systems so we decided to switch to home cooked meals for them. And we didn't want to spend more time or money than we have. After receiving this cookbook I may put the two humans in the home on this diet! Great easy recipes and happy, playful dogs without the return of their meals (insert "delicate" again). This is a must have cookbook for your dogs. Start with this book.

I just bought this book yesterday and have made three meals from it, so far, for my 4-month-old English Bulldog. This morning, I made one of the egg recipes with sweet potato and she was literally jumping for joy as I was preparing the meal. She loved it so much, she kept going back to the empty bowl and licking the sides. The cookbook does call for a lot of expensive meats like lamb, duck, and salmon so I may just stick only to the chicken and turkey meals. However, I feel that it's all worth it if you don't want to spend thousands at the vet later on. I never thought I'd be this kind of dog owner, but it does feel good to know you're trying your best at keeping 'em healthy and happy.

With all the dogfood & tainted dog treat scares, I decided to start making my dogs their own treats. You never know what bad ingredients are going into your pets food. With this cookbook you know exactly what your pet is being fed! This is a really fun and easy cookbook. My dogs LOVE the peanutbutter flavored treats. It's also a great cookbook for dogs with allergies, like my lab. I can monitor what he's being fed and leave certain ingredients out, if need be. Their coats are shinier and they seem happier and healthier. Great book!
