Book Description

March 22, 2011
In The Healthy Home, a father and son--Dr. Myron Wentz, well-known microbiologist and founder of the USANA Corporation, and Dave Wentz, CEO of the USANA Corporation--take readers on a tour of a specific home for a look at the surprising health risks posed by the everyday products and behaviors of a modern family. Beginning in the bedroom and ending in the garage and backyard, readers learn about the degenerative effects of toxins in the home and receive simple solutions to help minimize exposure without foregoing convenience.

The Healthy Home is not a comprehensive tome on modern health hazards; nor is it a treatise on eco-conscious living. Instead, the book focuses on the most important environment--the home--and the problems that can most easily be lessened or eliminated. Busy parents who suspect that they should be doing more to protect their family but don't know where to start will learn about practical changes they can make in the next fifteen minutes, fifteen days, or fifteen months to create a haven for healthier living.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Dave and Dr. Wentz have conspired to create an innovative and imaginative approach to living simply. As a physician, I would offer one bit of advice: heed the constructs, sentiments, and words written in this book. We cannot wait for the scientific method to verify the claims made. As individuals we must act now! We should follow our intuition and adhere to The Healthy Home.”
—Peter W. Rugg, M.D., FACEP

The Healthy Home is an amazing revelation of the ‘truths’ on everyday products that parents use for their children. This book will empower parents to take measures to protect their children from toxins that may threaten the health of our future generations.”
—Christine Wood, M.D., pediatrician and author of How to Get Kids to Eat Great & Love It

“I have met few individuals more generous, more approachable, and more caring than Dr. Wentz. He believes in true health and is seeking to discover its secrets with a passion that is as spiritual as it is scientific. In this brilliant collaboration with his son, Dave, we are able to witness the passage and expansion of simple truths from generation to generation.”
—Denis Waitley, Ph.D., bestselling author of The Psychology of Winning

The Healthy Home is simply brilliant! This will totally alter the way you look at the home you live in. If you want to protect the health of your family, you simply must read this book.”
—Robert G. Allen, New York Times bestselling author

The Healthy Home is full of practical and accessible health advice that will help you get a good night’s sleep, choose the right household cleaners, and figure out what products to avoid.”
—Christiane Northrup, M.D.,  New York Times bestselling author

5.0 out of 5 stars This book can change (or save) your life March 29, 2011
Format:Hardcover
This is an easy to read book that provides excellent advice on a key aspect of preventing illness and premature death. I'm qualified to say that, because despite having an immune deficiency I have not been sick since 1971. Dr. Wentz, Dave Wentz, and Donna K. Wallace are right on target, throughout this book.

This book shows you how to reduce the toxicity of your home to tolerable levels, greatly reducing a long list of risk factors for debilitating and costly illnesses. It touches, also on that tripod of diet, rest, and exercise. The advice it offers is excellent for several reasons:

1. It's accurate. Anyone reading my reviews knows I am brutal toward authors who present fiction as fact, and I often state such dereliction of editorial integrity is the norm. I found no factual errors in this book.

2. It's understandable. Rather than try to impress us with jargon, the authors made their points in plain English.

3. It's interesting. The book presents the information in the context of Ms. Wallace's witnessing Dr. Wentz's inspection of Dave Wentz's home. That real-life approach makes you want to keep reading, because the reader can relate to what's going on.

4. It's practical. Anyone can follow the advice in this book. In some cases, the authors say what's ideal but provide you with less than ideal alternatives for improving your home environment. It's directed at ordinary people who have ordinary incomes and ordinary levels of discipline. You do not have to become a monk to reap the benefits.

5. It's timely. In a nation that just recently endured major legislation allegedly concerned with lowering medical care costs while increasing the overhead involved in medical care and doing zilch in regard to health care, this book helps anyone solve root causes of medical problems. Health care is the key to greatly reducing medical care costs.

Another way this book stands out is there is no fluff. By that, I mean the authors don't waste your time with "advice" that is unlikely to be of any use. Nor do they try to tell us that we need to go back to the stone age or do anything else that is impractical. I'm tempted to provide examples, but I'd rather you read the book for yourself so you can enjoy the wealth of information in it, plus enjoy the health benefits of following what Dr. Wentz advises.

If the federal government actually wanted to reduce medical costs and fix the Medicare cost problem, it would issue a copy of this book to everyone who files a tax return. That small investment would save the public treasury billions of dollars per year, assuming the recipients read this marvelous book and followed even half of its sensible advice.

This book is nicely laid out, with a typeface that's actually large enough for an adult. It seems like a quick read, even though it's packed with information.

It consists of 6 chapters and two epilogues in 250 pages. It contains nice graphics and informative sidebars. Especially helpful are the frequent questionnaires that help the reader grade how well s/he is doing in a particular area. These are short, but illuminating.

I am writing this review about a week after my father died from causes that adherence to this book would have prevented. Sure, buy a copy for yourself and refer to it weekly. But get a copy for someone else, too. The greater the number of people following the advice in this book, the more all of us win.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enlightening, Not Frightening March 14, 2011
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Dr. Myron Wentz and his son, Dave Wentz (CEO of Usana Health Sciences, Inc.) have collaborated on a great guide to educate families on the hidden dangers inside the home. Dave's life changed with the birth of his first child in 2009, as all of us change when we become parents. That enlightenment confirmed for him the need to look at changing things...not the world, but where we spend the most time...the home.

This book provides facts and studies on the areas where we spend the most time; the bedroom, the bathroom, the office, the kitchen...our homes. The authors reveal small changes every family can make to reduce exposure to toxins and chemicals, and by doing so, to increase their chances of a longer, healthier lifestyle. The information is presented in an easy-to-read, humorous (where appropriate) fashion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Informative, Worthwhile Read April 7, 2011
Format:Hardcover
As an eco-friendly interior designer, I constantly keep an eye out for new books in my field. When I saw The Healthy Home: Simple Truths to Protect Your Family from Hidden Household Dangers, I picked it up (at B+N) and read it on the spot.

This is not the first book on this subject, but it is well researched and I had learned a lot. It is written by three authors--doctor Wentz and his son and Donna Wallace, the "listener". It is the the father who provides the unique perspective because he is a cellular doctor and it is through his understanding that we learn how toxic products actually harm and can destroy cells.

The book explains the hidden dangers in the home. The authors believe that indoor air pollution will one day be considered the asbestos of yesteryear.

Beginning in the bedroom, they discuss the common hidden toxins that can harm our health--from pesticides in mattresses, to chemicals in our pajamas to electricity. They also offer simple ans safe solutions.

I love the fact that they tell us to use our noses to help determine what is unhealthy--that a healthy and clean home is one that basically has no smell. They illustrate the dangers of perfume in an experiment with crickets dying from the chemicals that are perfume. And, they compare the dangers to perfume to that of second hand smoke! (As someone who is chemically sensitive, I say, amen! I am just waiting for the fine day that perfume is banned from all public spaces!)

I recommend HARMONIOUS ENVIRONMENT as a companion to this book, as I use it as a reference for my work. I also like books by Michael Pollan on how and what to eat.

This book is clear and easy to read and understand. Recommend.
